In a japanese ae86 what makes that speed alert sound Thu, 06 November 2003 01:30 Go to next message
hey guys
just been thinking
you know how in a jdm ae86 over 100kmh there is a speed alert sound (like a bell sound)

i was wondering what would govern this?-would it be a signal received from the guage and a speaker in it-or would it come directly from the ECU- im thinking about putting in a jdm guage in my aus spec sprinter and was wondering if i would get the speed alert bell as well coz i can see it getting annoying Smile

or will it only do that when it receives the apropriate signal from a jdm ecu?
anyhow i though it would be interesting to find out Smile

the chime is seperate to the instrument cluster, mine is located behind the stereo, id say that the instrument has a switch that is triggered by going 105k/h this would fire up the chime, the computer has nothing to do with it, it isnt as annoying as you may think,( my g/f import civic had one that sounded like a cheap clock radio - that was annoying!!,) i can unplug mine in all of 3seconds if i go on a big drive, they do come in handy when the speed limit is only 100.
matty.

it is mounted behind the dash, just run a switch through it. however, you will find that most importers either remove it or cut the wires before selling them.

If you can actually FIND a digital dash for an AE86, then if you can wire it up to make it go (because you can be gauranteed what wires do come with it will look like last weeks spaghetti!), you should be able to work out what makes the noises... Yep, a lot of Jap cars/trucks/etc. have got the little warning chimes. And they're bloody annoying!

the speed alerts on imported toyotas that i have removed have always been bolted to the back of the dash. It is a very simple job to remove it.

Wrong. It sits behind the little grill on the centre console. It's just two wires(obviously). You'll know if it says "Chime Unit" or something like that.
