JZX-81 => Cressida

Well, after advice from a number of people and a bit of thinking on my part I'm already bored with the idea of the 7mgte in my cressy. Lots of effort for little gain. Now I want a 1JZ. I figured for only a bit more $$ and effort, I can have a big gain in reliability and performance.
From what I can tell the most likely candidate for a 1jz conversion into my cressy is the JZX81 (chaser I believe it was... I think?). Anyway, assuming I can get the front cut, I was wondering what other nasties I can expect to run into. Will I need to fab up engine mounts, or can I just drop the sub frame from the JZX81 in? Any other forseeable problems? Drive shafts? Will the diff take it? In terms of wiring/ecu, I was just going to throw an LTX8 at it for the ignition/timing/engine stuff, and keep my current ecu for aircon and all the rest. Any tips or advice would be great however!

Seems like you have the basics in place.
Try GRANT of SIXWORKS for info, do a search, he's on this forum.
He should be able to answer any/all questions you may have.

Good advice - looking back on my (relatively simple 1jz)conversion, it wouldn't have been that much harder to go 2jz. But at least I have something to look forward to.....

if im not mistaken the chaser crossmember will bolt straight into the MX83 cressida with engine etc etc
depending upon which chaser halfcut u get obviously, its been covered before do a search.
Oh and this halfcut is the most expensive due to the demand of it for this exact conversion.

The 1JZ upgrade is piss-easy with these cars because the JZX81 is practically the same car but with a 1JZ installed; you just swap everything over and you're laughing. Don't kid yourselves though, a 2JZ install will be quite a lot of extra effort, mostly because of the electronics. Sure the engine itself will bolt up just as easily, but anyone who has done an engine conversion will tell you that's always the easiest part...

u dont need the std ecu for air con
u only need the ecu if u r goin to run an auto
yr porob better of runnin std ecu until u start boosting it up
the tune is 100% on a std ecu
where as the aftermarket depends on tuner

Thanks for the help guys. I've priced a JZX81 auto frontcut at $2800 which seems pretty good to me - is it?
As for the 2jz, yes, I would LOVE to do that conversion, but sadly I don't have enough for the frontcut. From what I can tell it'll cost me at least double for a 2jz frontcut in decent condition - money I sadly don't have

Walk in with cash in hand and say you will take it on the spot for $2400.

listen to sideshow - he's a wiring guru
if you do go aftermarket, go for an LTX12, so you can get rid of the wasted spark setup of the 1JZ (I never figured out why toyota did that - everything is fine, individual coil packs and all - then they join them in pairs with the wiring!)

hehehe Sideshow:
"yr porob better of runnin std ecu until u start boosting it up"
I think it'll take me all of 1 week before that starts to happen
Actually speaking of boosting it up, with proper tuning what sort of safe boost levels can I expect to run before the engine/fuel system/turbo's start running out of huff? Bare in mind that this will be a daily driver so I don't want it off it's nut. My last project had 17 pound running through it and it had appalling road manners. It was an extremely antisocial vehicle... fun though

depends on your cooler etc.
12-13psi is what most people run as everyday boost.
the newcastle boys tend to run 17psi all day, and have very few complaints about turbos dying. anything more than that and you need new turbos/injectors/fuel pump/ecu.
anything more than 13.5 and you need an FCD (or microtech)
I'm running about 14psi on mine, and you know how that feels

I believe I should say at this point in time, that those 2 mates Draven was referring to are also the same two mates who like to buy $50 cars from the trading post and from wreckers. They then proceed to take it off jumps, ramps, and anything else they can find . Many 1970's datsuns and corolla's have met their fate at those two goons hands.
