Hey all,
Just thought I'd post something cool I found out the other day...
*sometimes its good to have friends that are master toyota mechanics*
18rg and 18rc share the same block, meaning you can turn your 18rc boat anchor into an 18rg provided you have a head + pistons from an 18rg.
WHOOTAGE...
18rg head / pistons slot right in. (Don't use 18rc pistons because the piston head doesn't clear the valves)
and then you just need to reroute one other thing *have to remember what my mechanic friend told me* then I'll post it
Easy peasy - boat anchor to sports motor just like that
well not quite but you get the picture...
ooh so you all know - I know this cos its what's happening to my 18rg atm
WHOOT

It's actually quite a bit harder than that. There are lots of little differences, especially with the timing gear which is totally different. It turns out you need so much stuff from an 18R-G to convert your 18R-C, you might as well just buy a whole 18R-G and be done with it.

*the little things my mechanic didn't tell me*
Good thing I had a 95% good 18rg needing only some parts from an 18rc
Cheers Norbie You're always a good source of info

I have previously used an 18R-C block to replace the one with a scored bore in an 18R-G, but everything else was swapped over. Motor went for about 160,000 km after that, and only needed to be re-ringed to be fresh as a daisy !!!
The only thing that caused a hassle is that the dipstick hole is on the other side of the block (meaning that the dipstick on the 18R-C block ends up being directly under the carbs when used in an 18R-G configuration).
Something I didn't notice till too late
I didn't notice any other problems tho'
Cheers

yep and thats about where the similarities end.
differences would be:
oil pump, head, pistons, all the valve timing gear, dizzy... and the list goes on.

Sorry Ra23, As RA40Celica pointed out, there are differances.I have also heard that the 18R block is NOT AS STRONG (sidewalls/waterackets)as the 18RG block. And as Norbie stated , It would be much easier and hassle free just to source an 18RG. In my opinion, you would be better off just getting the 18RG package, And even if its fucked and needs a rebuild, You will still be better off in the long run, having a nice reco 18RG to cruise the streets with.
Thats my two cents......
