My car is wacked

Was driving to get petrol today and the car started fine and drove to the petrol station fine, put fuel in it, went back out to start it and it kicked but just just died, after numerouse attempts the car wouldnt start so I pushed it to a park and left it there.
I came back about 4 times during the day to double check everything, make sure it wouldnt start and still got the same result. After deciding I would have to tow it home I got tow rope and headed back there at like 8pm, thought I would try kick it and it started, felt fine, drove fine and I was able to drive it around all night.
When trying to start at the petrol station it would kick, idle really low and conk out, when I was able to get the revs up they would drop as if the car was really cold and had no cold start. Also heard a couple of popping sounds, but have heard them before with no worries
Any suggestions
Thanks

Fuel or ignition, check everything I'd check your fuel pumps and timing first and work back from there.

hey man, I had a similar problem with mine. was it cold? ie: could it be the choke is stuffed? Also I'd be cheking the points and ignition setup, could be really dirty. hope this helps. oh and I'm guessing this is why u needed sean moloney's ph number.

It fuel injected so there is no choke, and no it wasnt cold and I had just driven it to the petrol station anyways, yea need sean's no. to put some new distributor leads. Thanks anyway

Yep first time it has happened, how do I check if there is moisture in the fuel line.
My theory is perhaps because it needs new distibutor leads maybe it wasnt sparking properly and flooding the engine, but I still dont get why it started up later on in the day.
