Test Firing a 1J out of the vehicle

To make sure I don't have too many surprises when the engine goes in, I am going to start/idle my 1J out of the car.
It is currently sitting upright on a pallet so I will nail/bolt a few things on to the pallet for:
- radiator support
- ps reservior attachment
- exhaust mounting
- engine support!
Basically I plan to:
- inspect the condition of the plugs
- bridge the heater inlet/outlet pipes
- change the oil & filter
- fill the radiator with coolant
- connect up the ECU & 'check engine' light
- crank it with no fuel for about 30 secs (to get oil flowing around the engine & turbos)
- crank it with fuel - hopefully it starts & idles
- let it warm up to operating temp (I will have a temp gauge attached)
I have at least one question:
- It has a single engine drive belt, so the ps pump will be running. What do I do with the ps hose? - just connect it straight back into the ps reservior? (I don't have a spare rack)
If I've missed any other steps please tell me.
Thanks in advance
Peter

The engine only did 800k's in current state!
Try filling a small container with PS fluid and making sure the pipes dont get any air into them
the alternative would be to use connectors to join them back up and form an enclosed loop
These are purely uninformed ideas.

thats way too much work
its just as easy to bolt it up in the car
dont u trust it
u dont need to run front belt
leave it off
dont run any water
dont run it long enough
just pressure test cooling system with engine out somehow
u would hate for the engine to torque to much when crankin and flip over
these r the risks u take fit import engines
plus i recon it would be quicker to bolt engine up in car
run it then if theres any probs fix them
by the time u wire it up
do water system
exhaust
and also bolt engine down properly
it would take u over a day

difficult be idea pain that.
I agree with sideshow. I bought a 4age for a darn low price and i have no idea of condition. Thus im chucking it in and seeing how it goes - if there is a problem THEN fix it.

agreed
if you must know it starts, just start it with no coolant etc, and run it for 30 secs or so - any *serious* problems should show up then.

yeah, i'm doing the same with my 1uz
all i'm gonna do before it goes it is take out the plugs, and do a compression test
the rest of the tests will occur once the motor is in the ve-hi-cle

although usually engines that have been sitting in a heap for a while have really crap compression. Every 'import' engine I've played with so far has measured apallingly on the gauge beforehand, but after running for a bit has come up 180-210psi on all cylinders.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I guess it's just something I've got to do (1st ever engine conversion).
Anyone have any more ideas about what should be done with the ps pump lines?

Yeah, just loop the PS line through the reservoir. I've had mine running like this for a few months now (my steering rack has a big leak).
