i have a 18RGU in my corona and whenever it rains it runs like a bucket of shit.
i pulled it up to work {undercover} to check for possible water on the electrics and it was running fine, and literlly as soon as i hit the road it runs like shit, then i take it back to work its fine.....WTF.....
on the way home it was absolutely pissing down and it just barely ran at all, then closer to home it was clean except for a still wet road and it ran almost ok, the later it was completely dry and it was fine, and then i went closer back to work where it wasnt raining but still wet and it wasnt running quite ok,
but if i put in the clutch and rev it when its runnign bad it revs fine, only when loaded up
it has sone this 3 times now, all 3 times its been COLD but only twice raining
i have 2 fully rebuilt solex's on there

dude I don't know if this will help at all, but my car used to just not start in rainy weather or stall etc..
I replaced my ignitor-distributor cable, and no more problem!

Probably a dodgy earth... often the extra moisture in the air when it rains will make them play up.

Ask shane ( cool1 ) to look over it - he's good with bad earths
Though to me it sounds like moisture playing havoc with the ignition ..

Have you taken out the weather strip at the back of the bonnet? My AE85 did that when water came from the back of the bonnet and got in between the cam covers(on a 4AGE) and into the plugs. Try having a look at that.

Check the main engine earth ... use WD40 if necessary

how old are the plug leads?
if they've done a fair amount of work, is possible that the insulation isn't up to scratch in humid environment. Also check for cracks in the insulation where they clip into cable holders.
can you get a stand-by setof plug leads in the car for a rainy day?
... and the earths to worry about are (seeing as you have points):
earth at coil
earth from batt(-) to chassis
earth strap from chassis or battery to engine
also, do you have the weatherstrip at the front bonnet lip? otherwise driving in rain will result in mist coming in thru that gap - engine heat would evap. most eater, but the humid environment would let poorly-insulated HV connectors leak to earth.
ta,
charles.

Yeah, have a look at the earths.
Another thing that could be an issue is the air filter.
If you're running ramflow type filters and they get full of water it'll run like shit. It will run really really rich, similar to using a large block of open cell foam as your filter.
If it runs like shit right through the rev range then it is more likely to be earth.
If it is not too bad at idle but gets really shit at a particular point and every point after that, have a lok at your air filters, see if they're soaked.

i can fully see the logic behind that but it stops as soon as i get out of the weather
i have just put on a new rotor, new points and a new cap, my leads are 2 month old Top Guns with the plug seals, and i have very good platinum plugs, the only thing is earth, it just has to be earth

nope - if you earth that lead you get blown fuse i think...
you have old-style points ignition?
power to coil should come via ballast resistor to the + connector
the - connector should head over to the points, which is switched to earth when the points close or to the small capacitor (inside or bolted to outside of dizzi) when points are open.
sometimes there's a noise suppresor capacitor between the ballast resistor and earth.
anyway, that's from my notes about the 18R
Cool1 is a auto-sparkie? he should know if this is right?
maybe that small capacitor at the dizzi is stuffed - anyway, i thought most 18RGs were electronic spark (reluctor inside dizzi, ignitor attached to coil)?

does it only happen when you are driving, any way water could be comin up from under the car, ie have you removed any of the splash guards ?
its always the last thing u think about that is the prob.

My guess is water on the dissy. It doesn't have to be much. I heard a story how a guy would start up and run fine then as soon as it got warm it stopped, they couldn't figure out why for months. Until they stood their and watched under the bonnet, as soon as it got warm this tiny pin hole in the radiator hose expanded just enough to send a tiny jet of water onto the dissy and it shut off almost strait away.
So if your leads are a bit old then it could be enough water is getting in there to make your car run like crap. You wouldn't really be able to see water on anything in there cause it would all get warm and evaporate very quickly.
Apparently the old mini's were bad in the rain with water on the dissy, my dad solved the problem with putting a plastic bag over his and it was no longer a problem. Maybe try that as a trial and error type thing to eliminate the dissy as the problem.

Why don't you try running the car till std temp, then slowly go around the car with a hose, starting from under the car and working up. Just let the hose run down the door jams and under the car wet some of the motor eg. sump , starter mtr, etc. if nothing happens there run the water over the bonnet, see if anything happens. Also check filters on solexs, maybe they absorb moister and clog up till they dry out. Just a thought?
