Andrew - quite a few of us have similar (if not the same) model handheld UHF radios which we take on cruises.
I know i always bring mine, and it's great to keep in touch with others in the convoy

why dont you just spend $150 of a full setup for a HF CB and have it all installed in your car they might not be as clear as a UHF but they still work very well if they are set up correct.

Here's a question. Do any of you guys know what frequency these things use?
They were really cheap in the US, but I didn't buy them because I figured that the frequencies would be different from the ones in Australia.
The ones in the US use the 462.5625 - 467.7125MHz range.
Anyone know what frequencies your CBs use?

What in the heck is a HF CB? I was aware of UHF & AM units, but have never heard of HF.. Sounds like a pretty cheap price for a car-mounted unit..

I was just wondering if they were the same as the radios we have here, just on different frequencies! If this is the case, they may be able to be converted!

Ah, that's what you meant. They looked like the same sorts of brands.
But I was told that it could be pretty difficult to convert them to use the Australian frequencies... I would've thought you'd just change the crystal.

No, its not just as simple as changing the crystal! Its just a matter of tricking the radio onto a higher frequency! Do it all the time here at work, with different radios of course! Although i'm not sure if they use 25KHz channels over there like we use here! I'll have a look into it.

well you have HF and UHF cb's just like you have VHF as well VHF stands for (Very High Frequency) UHF stands for (Ultra High Frequency) and HF stands for (High Frequency) VHF runs on around 100 something MHZ UHF runs on 400 something MHZ where HF runs on 27Mhz a general rule is the higher the frequency the clearer the sound HF you get a fair bit of distortion and don't have the distance to a UHF yet an in car HF CB has the same range if not a bit more then a hand help UHF CB but because your not getting the sound quality and so forth thats why they are much cheaper, but they still do the job if you just want to talk to mates in other cars while driving some place, A good Uniden in car HF CB so called (AM CB) yet they run the the HF band is $119 from Dicksmith, u then buy an aerial mount $9 the antenna coax cable $22.60 then the Antenna $18.95
All easy to install yourself no problems at all then if you want to make sure you get the best possible sound and distance you get it SWR'ed in which is where they connect a SWR meter in between the antenna and the unit and tune the antenna (by cutting off little bits of the top) till its exact and getting the best performance, lots of people think CB's are shit as they go out buy all the stuff then install it and find they don't have much distance and so forth where if you go to some car audio places where they also do CB installation even a 4wd shop they can SWR it in for you for about $10 and it makes a big difference.
much cheaper and better if its only for that weekend cruse with mates compared to getting an in car UHF CB which you will be looking at about $250 for just the unit.
main reason UHF is clearer then HF is UHF uses FM while HF uses AM thats why you get a bit of distortion through the HF radio's
plus you don't have to worry about having a hand help UHF CB charged all the time as this unit just runs of the cars 12V

Ok cool, thanks for clearing all that up GIN51E.
As it happens, I'm most likely going to be getting an in-car UHF system (that's also capable of scanning Police frequencies) sometime soon at a very cheap price (and no, it isn't stolen either! ). So i guess I'll have the best of both worlds! (ie. cheap, powerful and clear )

ummm... i think you will find that the majority of cb antennas these days are pre-SWR tested.... hence NO NEED to get it cut down using a SWR meter. I should know this having worked in Car Radio installation, and now currently working for Jaycar electronics (where i sell pre-SWRed antennas). There are a few dodgy antennas out there these days that need to be cut down, but usually everything is pre-tested.

i'd love an in car UHF except not possible on my $110 a week income and having to feed my car with petrol, and me with food. so i'm thinking of just getting a cheapy hand held UHF just so i can still keep in conact with anyone who is running a UHF
also some UHF cb's also have the option to transmit on HF as well so you might be interested in looking into that.

Ummmm No! This it not the case! This is also not possible! You maybe thinking of some radios that Have a UHF radio and a 27Meg radio built into one!
And to clear things up, There is no such thing as a "Pre-SWRed" in antenna for 27MHz! The SWR will change depending on where the antenna is mounted! For example, if you mount a antenna on a bullbar and SWR it in, then move it to the gaurd you will most likey find that the swr has changed!

Well generally if something can transmit on both uhf and hf weather its just two radios in one or what you tend to say its a single radio that transmits on both, have a look in the new dicksmith catalogue page 33 at the Uniden UH-090 Combined Mobile 27Mhz and UHF CB its the same size as any other uhf cb yet transmits on both so i would just save time by saying its a uhf cb that can also transmit on HF also the other guy might be thinking of those antenna's which have a built in SWR adjustment you know those ones where you adjust the little pole thing to SWR it in, rather then having to cut the Antenna, but usually these type of antennas never work very well. and i can't see any antenna's which say they are already swr'ed in they all say "easy snip to SWR"

My advice is don’t waste your time with 27MHz! Spend your money on a decent UHF radio, and I don’t mean a cheap piece of crap from dicksmith either! Go spend another $100 or so on a good second hand commercial 2-way radio like a Tait T2020! These radios have 25Watts output which is 20 more watts than a standard shitter(yes I know this is illegal but no one will know), they have 100 channels or 1200 channels if you pay the extra and they are fully programmable! Being fully programmable means you can program the CB channels as well as the Police and any other frequencies in the UHF band you would like to listen to! Being built to a commercial specification they a tuff as old boots and will last 10 times as long as a cheaper item! Just my 10 cents..

you have to remember that some people are on a budget, and the most common cb in a car is a 27MHZ theres no point in getting a UHF if all your mates can't afford one and can only afford a 27mhz i'd like a UHF but theres no point for me as everyone else i know has 27MHZ

The center of the roof is the best place by far for a UHF antenna, but there is no way I would drill into my roof either! You could always buy a magnetic base and put your antenna on this, then sit it in the middle of your roof! But on my Ford I use a boot mount for my antenna! Download this PDF: http://www.rfindustries.com.au/rfiproducts/accesso ries/mopole_r164.pdf I use the BK850, But there are other mounts to choose from! I'm am a Pro installer so ask any questions you like.

lol thanks for the quick reply Cool1, you really are a forums junkie!
The Trunk Lip Mount bracket could be the go, not the ideal spot on the side of the car but at least saves me drilling holes... not that it makes that much difference since the roof is full of hail damage anyway, but hopefully will be back to it's former glory one day...
The window mount looks interesting as well... at least I know who to see when getting it done.
Like to get some more info on the Tait T2020 as well.. sounds interesting.

well i know they have a 3km out door line of sight range but for the price they are great, i've only got to use one for a little bit which was a friends and they are very clear good quality sound my friend has one and they just went on a 3 week trip out to the desert and they liked it. you will find anthing made by Uniden is very good they don't make anything dodgy
but yeah to answer your question they are pretty good and very good for the price.

never heard of roadsound before but its not going to work if it doesn't have the right aerial, if its a uhf cb then make sure your using a uhf aerial if its a hf cb make sure your using a hf aerial then do a radio check by calling people and see if someone answers (but sometimes no one answers and sometimes a few guys answer)
