manifold adapter plates Sat, 08 November 2003 10:48 Go to next message
Hi Everyone,
I have a GT series turbine that I want to put on my Gen III 3SGTE. I wanted to use the standard manifold and use an adapter plate to bolt it on. Instead of having an adapter plate that bolts on to the manifold and then the turbo I wanted to weld it to the manifold and bolt it to the turbo. I am unsure if it is possible to weld cast iron? What metal would be best to make this from?

Thanks

Anhar Khamas

Generally speaking, you can't weld cast iron. Not if you want it to last anyway.

Yes, it is possible, and has been done a few times. Make the new plate out of pretty thick steel, and if you're not doing it yourself, get someone with some kind of experience to weld it together for you and it should be fine. Evil or Very Mad

Cast iron can be welded but you need a pretty good/experienced welder to do it. They need to heat the objects to cherry red, weld and let it air cool. Hopefully it won't crack.

THanks for the info ..... I can see why people dont do it now. I think I will end up bolting it to the manifold as the last thing I want is to have a cracked 205 manifold and try to find another one.

Thanks Cool1 I'll remember that when I attack my 205 manifold with a blow torch and it crumbles in my hands when I pick it up Shocked

One manifold is enough...... I was in need of 205 brakes but I belive you dont have anymore in your 205 spare parts catalog.
