If you're into science I recommend these all time classics:
A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking
Chaos - James Gleick
Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid - Douglas Hofstadter
As for fiction:
Histories of Middle Earth (like the Silmarillion, Book of lost tales, Unfinished tales, etc... The histories are awesome. LOTR is boring) - J.R.R. Tolkien
Foundation series - Isaac Asimov
Gap series - Stephen Donaldson
Magician - Raymond E. Feist
Dragonlance Chronicles - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

lang wrote on Tue, 11 November 2003 12:18 | lord of the rings is boring? you must be kidding
its like the original fantasy book, from whence all others are just rip off's such as your dragon wank chronicles.
oh and by the way, ive read ALL the drangonlance chronicles, but how dare you insult tolkien,
what did you think of the hobbitt then>?
mabye if you try and read it after seeing the movie it would be boring, but i read it when i was like 8 and it was very interesting then, and ive read it a few times since
EDIT: oh and im not trying to say your stupid for not liking what i like im just really suprised!

I read the Hobbit when I was 9. LOTR when I was 10.
If you enjoy reading through pages and pages of poems, then you'll enjoy LOTR, otherwise, it's freaking boring.
The Silmarillion is awesome. The tale of Beren and Luthien is perphaps the best story EVER!
And Tolkien didn't invent fantasy. That's bullshit. Orcs and dragons et al have been in mythology for thousands of years. What he did was create the most breathtaking world ever created and proceeded to write hundreds of tales located in that world. Then he wrote a boring epic which everyone sees but no one bothers reading the rest of the stuff which is shitloads better.

I would've listed WOT, but the latest book is FUCKING BORING AND TOTALLY POINTLESS! Nothing actually happens in the book, and I'm still very pissed off about it.... Just jumping from one character to the next without any sense of meaning...

too true
there I was at the end of the 9th thinking "cool, getting climatic now" and then there's that shitter.
although admittedly it ties rand in with the daughter of the 9 moons, I think the whole thing could have been tagged on as a 100 page intro to the next book (which I cant wait for)

12 is going to be the last (quote from RJ).
everyone thought it would be 13, to match up with the whole 13 thing through the books, but apparently 12 is it - so only 2 to go

hey nark
yeah i agree with you about the poems/songs ect
but i always skimmed/skiped completley the songs could never be bothered with that kind of stuff its not my thing.
you dont actually need to read them, alot of the time there singing about crap thats not vital to the storyline. if you take them out its quite a good read

I appreciate the movies.
as long as you walk in remembering that they're *based* on the books, not following them word for word, they're actually bloody good.
for example, the whole sam/bill thing would have seemed crappy and soppy, so they limited that to a "goodbye bill". equally, when they kill the cave troll instead of "wizard locking" the door behind them, that adds a bit of action (which turned out as a VERY cool scene).
and max - dont ask me!

True. Translations to screen always require a bit of tweaking of the story and I don't mind that. It's just things that they change like anything to do with Arwen, and how Faramir tries to take the ring (totally against Faramir's character) where I get annoyed.
It was a bit sad that they cut out Tom Bombadil. I can understand why, but he is such an intriguing character. He's actually the most powerful resident of Middle Earth. The only character more powerful than him that makes an appearance in LOTR is Throndor (the eagle that saves Gandalf from Saruman's tower).
I always feel sad when people just stop at LOTR and don't continue on and read the Histories. The stories are so much better, even Aragorn's life story is more exciting.
Did you know that Aragorn was the highest advisor to the current Stewart's father? And that he was willing to turn the kingdom over to Aragorn even though he didn't know the truth about Aragorn?
And that Aragorn is related to Elrond and Arwen? Elrond's brother was Aragorn's great, great, great, great, great (etc) grandfather who chose to be human instead of Elven (Elrond and his brother are half elven). He took one of the Silmarils back to the Valar and for that, they gave his descendants the island of Numenor. And now the only descendants of Numenor are the so called Rangers that Tolkein eludes to...
I could go on all day. But I think I'll stop there....
There's a whole world waiting to be unleashed to anyone willing to sit down and read the Histories.
The story of Beren and Luthien (who's names Tolkein has on his grave).
The absolutely tragic tales of the houses of Huor and Hurin.
Feanor and the Silmarils. And the curse that fell on his sons.

LOTR - epic. I couldn't get into the silmarillian though, it was more of a text book then stories, and it read like it wasn't finished. Didn't finish reading it (only book to date I havn't finished).
WOT are great if you can get past the first 100 pages of the first book.
Dragonlance are good too. Weis and Hickman ones at least.
Martin Middleton is my favourite Sci-Fi author. I've got all his books (10).
The Star Wars - X-wing series is bloody good too, just finishing reading it again, the seccond author (books 5,6,7) is so much better than the other one.
As for the original post. If you want some personal development books, one of my favourites is Developing the leader within you. Biggest lesson learnt from that book:
If you're struggling with getting people on your side, talk to them one on one and talk them around BEFORE the meeting. If you've got the majority already, get everyone together (get everyone in the one meeting) and then the doubting people won't take on the majority.

The Silmilarian reads as a history, not as a story. I didnt really find it all that easy to read. But loved it. It was fascinating.
Xwing series was excellent. You are right about that. Read them a couple of times.
Might have to go check out Martin Middleton. Is that all 10 books in one series? Or has he got a number or series??

I read *some* of my readers for university!
other than that.. The Message (version of the Bible, very cool), uh, LOTR I have read. Assimov does cool stuff.
Been a while since I read some really good fiction though. All I read it seems are biographies, manuals and uni stuff
Can't wait to get into the Silmilarian

6 books in the Cronicles of the custodians (in 2 parts)
3 books in another series
1 book by itself
I can led you the first 3 books if you want, see if you like him. I like his books because he does a lot with normal everyday characters, doesn't need to be a king or a prince (like LOTR and David Eddings').
Gimme a PM if your interested.
