IJZ MKII Conversion

Hello
I'm trying to decide on a chassis for my 1JZ (MKIII) front cut. Obviously the easiest is to find a MKIII, but i've always considered the MKII a tough looker, and reckon the extra 100k or so lighter weight may make things a little more animated.
So can anyone give me a heads up on what's required for a 1JZ with manual gbox into MA61? I'm mainly interested in mechanicals here... ie engine / gbox mounts, alignments, clearances re sump and steering cross member, turbos and master etc etc.
Any comments on wiring the factory JZA70 ECU/loom into MA61 would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

It's all pretty straightforward if you have a front mounted sump, which unfortunately you do not. You'll need custom engine mounts of course, but there are no clearance issues to be concerned about. Gearbox is easy if you use a 2JZ-GE W58 (bolts straight up), but with a bit of extra work you can squeeze in an R154.
Oh yeah, a Mk2 is actually 200+ kg lighter than a Mk3, so you'll be doing 12's without raising a sweat.

yep, you'll need a new sump. places will sometimes swap a front sump for a mid/rear sump, plus a little extra money - so do that if you can.
engine mounts can be had thru JAZE on these forums for $250. the 2jz-ge w58 will be required, as norbie mentioned. Wiring is pretty easy - I'm in the process of doing that at the moment - there's not a whole lot that needs to be cut/soldered.
some of the lines need to be re-routed/lengthened, and if you have an auto car you need to cut the shifter hole a little bigger (next on my list)
otherwise pretty damn easy - I just moved the gbox and engine from my wreck and into the new car in less than 3 hours, so it doesn't take a huge amount of time either (of course, all the peripherals and wiring still have to be sorted out)

Thanks guys
I prefer to use the 1J 5spd... the R154 is the MA70 box (???), i take it the same box resides behind the 1JZ?
The idea is bang for bucks... clean n lean but no show pony
Guess i'll start looking for a good MKII; might as well be a pussy too... and keep the ps. Will try to rid the hydraulic fan setup.
Appreciate the advice

R154 is the box behind the 1J
It will need slight encouragement to fit, but has been done.

Wow this is an old thread!
The only conversion "diary" I know of is my site; it covers my 2JZ conversion but a 1JZ conversion is similar.

Yeah Lumpy, I've reached my breaking point as of the other night.
I'm sick of getting screwed around my tuners and workshops and the amount of money it has taken and then the amount of money it has taken to redo a lot of things.
This car has a sad history which has eaten away at me for a long time. It's really unfortunate as it is 99% complete. Only the tuning remains, again, for the 6th time or so.
I just want to get rid of it before it costs me another 10k. I'd settle for something stock.

Jeez mate don't sell it just because you can't get a decent tuner. PM or email with the workshops you've tried etc. There are some good and cheap people in Adel, but they're hard to find.
I know how you feel being sick of it all - but it's so close now, don't let some bad experiences with dickheads grind you down.

Hehehe, I know EXACTLY how you feel.
I had my conversion just sitting there collecting dust for 4 months because the tuner was retarded.
So in the end I said fuck it, and bought a Microtech, wired it up, and I've had 4 weeks of running rich as fuck fun!
Its finally gonna get some tuning on saturday, but I can still drive it none-the-less

Damn, that's going back a while! From memory the engine cost me $900 and I was out of pocket almost $2k by the time it was on the road. This was in 1999 though so those figures aren't really relevant any more. Not much work is needed, it's mostly wiring and dramas with the dizzy, but that's only in you're using the 5M-E ECU. If you have a 5M-GE/6M-GE ECU to go with your engine it will be a lot easier.
Power gains were pretty major; the 6M-GE has at least 30-40hp more than the 5M-E, and it makes a huge difference. With a manual transmission it makes the car a lot of fun!
