Corolla 4AGE thermal fan sensor Sun, 09 November 2003 23:46 Go to next message
Hi Guys,

I have a question about the thermal sensor in my 89 SX Seca (4AGE). I got the car in winter, and have been trying to systematically get to know its ins and outs etc etc (last weeks effort was the squeling brakes that led to replacing undersize rotors and pads!). From memory of our old 92 Camary, the electric fans used to be on quite a lot, yet the fans in my Seca have never come on.

It finally got warm in Canberra this weekend, and i expected the fans to come on, but nope! I pulled the plug to the thermal sensor, and the fans both came on no probs.

Does the 4AGE just run 'cool' then? My temp guage never goes above its 'normal' position (ie horizontal) which seems to be where the thermostat opens. What is a safe way to check the sensor is working correctly, and at what temp should the relay open?

Cheers Chris.

pull it out plug it in and wave a lighter under it to heat it see if the fans come on, dont go over the top and cook it tho!

The fan will only activate when the car's idling AND when it's hot. If your system overheats, then you got a problem (which would be more likely to be the radiator).

If you want to test it, the best way is in a container of water with a thermometer in it to tell you the temp. It's supposed to come on at pretty high temps though - about 90C
