Some major rear end noise. Metalic grating sounds and whining and rubbing... not cool Sun, 09 November 2003 23:56 Go to next message
CAR = 1974 TA22
I had this rubbing noise coming for the rear left for ages. i thought it was the wheel bearings and nothing major so i planned to keep driving it until after my hsc has ended. anyway i have finished the hsc and now the noise got a whole lot worse.

So tell me what could it be?

so far options seem to be...
Replace diff.
DO wheel bearings ( In the celica manual ive got i can see any wheel bearings for the rears... are there even any)
CV joints is what the manual says to look at.
What do u guys think?

holes in your exhaust?

i know this sounds weird but i had a hole in my exhaust once and its quite strange but it makes a metallic grating hissing sound, which doesnt sound like a leak at all really.

well after further inspection its the diff minimum ad id say also the wheel bearings and stuff. Jacked the rear wheels up and only 1 wheel goes round... nice...

What i need to know now...
What diff's are compatible in a ta22?
Newer the better. any chance i would be able to upgrade to discs on the rears while im at it?

Thanks in advance

Have a read on how a diff works and then see if you can figure it out sounds like its your drum brakes making grinding noises to me.

My friend and I first assumed brakes. My fried pretty much always helps me hes a great fella. Umm so off i went got some new brake shoes and got ready to change them but they looked perfectly fine... so we checked they out some more and there was nothing wrong with them. that was about a month ago.

Now due to the brake fluid leaking yes i assume there was extra noises from that but not just that. I think i need to take it to a professional mechanic for just a look and i'll try to the labour but i really just dont know enough.

I guess start by draining the oil out of the diff look for bits of metal and the likes and then work outwards to the wheel bearings. Does the noise sound like a train or just a wiring noise that changes with the velocity of the car?
