W57 5-speed transmission

Hi all,
I recently discovered that the transmission I pulled out of an MA61 Supra is not a W58 as you would expect, but a W57. Weird! Anyway it's of no use to me, so I'm selling it. It has no bellhousing or shifter, but apart from that it's all good. Make an offer.

If you go to a regular wrecker they'll want between $400-600.
If you luck upon one at a pick-a-part DIY wrecker (and I have seen them there) you get it for $150-250.

the w58 has a steel sandwich plate (plate between the 2 box castings) and the w57 has an alloy one.
The w57's came out in ra65 celicas, and some supras.
If you can pick the sound of alloy vs steel when you hit it with a screwdriver, you can tell if its a w57/58. ANyway yes its noticeable if you know what to look for!

Yeah the steel sandwich plate is the difference from the outside. The steel sandwich plate is darker compared to the alloy one.
Inside the difference is a more overdriven 5th gear (1st -> 4th and reverse are the same).

Notice in the above pic that the far left Gbox has a lighter sandwich plate than the one just on the right? W55 / W57 (not sure which could be either?) is on the left and the one over to the right is a W58.
Cheers

Toyota made the W58 with a steel sandwich plate and also with an alloy sandwich plate, my celica ahs a alloy plate and the firewall reads: W58, the last time i saw a W57 on the ID plate was on a 1GGTE soarer cut and it had a steel sandwich plate.

i think its gotto do with actual gear ratios,
w57 and w58 1st gear is same- 3.28
2nd w57 = 2.06:1
2nd w58= 1.89
3rd w57= 1.27
3rd w58 = 1.27
4th w57 = 1.00
4th w58 = 1.00
5th w57 = .86
5th w58 = .78

Goto this link ..here.. add you will find that the only difference is 5th gear (not second as well). It also has the ratios for W55 / W5 and others.
Sorry for the hijack norbie....

Norbie: How do you know its a W57, and not a W58? What did it say on the plate in the engine bay?
Jaze: I actually used a 22RE engine from a celica, the plate in the engine bay said it had a W58, but also it looked like a W57.

Pete: I'm assuming it's a W57 since it has an alloy sandwich plate, but I never saw the build plate on the donor car so I don't know what the code was.

well it was i who had the gz20 soarer cut that jaze mentioned
with my g'box sitting next to 2 other w58's, there was no difference to be seen
i cant see how a w58 could be stronger, since i'f got a quote to change 5th gear ratio and make it 'exactly' the same...
