Hi Everyone, Im looking at buying this 1990 corolla sedan to replace the fairmont as i need something easier on the wallet!
Can someone please tell me:
- it is a non-efi fwd one...which engine would that be?
- Any problems with these cars i should be wary of/ look for?
- Are they easy to work on?
- Which model is it? (eg ae90?)
- its got 170km. Any worries at about this age?
- any upgrades i need to do straight away other than a nice service?
Thanks heaps!
Blake.

Engine would lost likely be a 4AC...
I don't know of any probs... Just check the usual like leaks and unusual or abnormal noises...
Yes... They are reasonably easy to work on... Ofcourse and EFi is easier but the carbies aren't too hard...
The model would prolly be an AE92... Check to see what the VIN number is... mine is like _ _ _ _ AE93_ _ _ _... Like that... So that tells me that my car is an AE93... You can work it out...
170kms... Check to see when the timing belt was replaced and when the last service was... Go from there...
Check the service history and see when things were replaced... Check fuel filters, air filter, oil and filter, spark plugs and maybe even give the carby a good clean... Just take off the air filter and it's housing and spray carby cleaner into the carby... That should get out a bit of the crap that would've built up in there over the years...
Hope this helps...

Hey go the rolla!
If its a 1990mod its a AE-92 so thats a 4A-FC
so im guessing its a CS
Twincam 1600cc Carby
170thou is just run in for a toyota isnt it?
not a bad start
start lookin for a 4A-GE
depending on price i would look round for a CSI couple more features and injected

nah i can get this one at the right price
Its not a toy or anything so ill just keep the stock engine, unless its an easy job to install efi and a "g" camshaft!

its an elderly couple's spare car
Is it difficult to change to efi and the cams? Or not worth the effort and stuffing around?

Its much more than just cams between a 4A-F* and a 4A-GE.... its an entirely different head!
The 4A-FC is a darn good little run around. If you dont want to spend more than $1.5-3K on it, then leave it as is! Otherwise the 4a-ge 100kW or 20V silvertop is the go.
I preferred the 4A-FE myself. Both me and a friend had the FE and FC respectively, and i found my FE got much more fuel economy and better response (esp in the COLD!).
Expect to have to do usual shit like timing belt etc when you buy it, unless you are lucky and it was just done.

How hard is it to conver the FC to FE? And cost approximately?

dunno dude... hardly anyone does it. Most go straight for the GE rather than stuff around just for an FE.
Too much $$ for such little gain.
Stick with what is stock unless you want to go for a GE.

I have a 4AFC with 450,000 k's on it. I have it's service history so I know most of it's mileage is highway driving between Sydney and Woolongong plus Exeter and Wollongong. Uses a little oil, but not much since I switched to Penrite HP50 oil. Runs like a dream, very reliable after some early earthing problems which I think were the cause of the previous owner selling. Get 500+ k's to the tank, easy to park. Look for signs of rust around rear of the lip of the rear wheel arches (near bumper bar) - easy to patch up, not structural. Easy upgrades include front swaybar (makes a big difference to handling and feel), rear discs (if you can get them), 1.25 inch lower suspension, front discs (depending on what's in there already), SX interior is nicer. Don't worry about EFI until you're ready to go to a 4AGE motor. Happy motoring.

yeah i thought u'd get more like 800-900km to a tank with highway driving? And around 5-600 around down? 450km, damn thats pretty damn good for one that hasnt been rebuilt!
