Next project...

I'm thinking of putting one of these http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ccsshb/12cyl/ into a KE10...
Are there likely to be any "technical difficulties"?

Just imagine the power you'd make with that torque if you put a cam in it and made it rev out to 500rpm

Actually, I just worked it out - if you made the same torque at 500rpm, you'd have 533921 horsies. And at 1000rpm there'd be 1067843 of phar lap - you might want to look at a diff/gearbox upgrade, and some reasonable tyres to help traction. What did the engineer say?

you would definitely need to upgrade to the KE55 borg warner, and you might need to put some "wynns gearbox saver" into your K40 box.
You might also need to upgrade your fronts to AE71 brakes, and you will definitely need a sticker of some sort.
Other than that.. no worries mate.

You may also need a bigger fuel tank as the standard one may not get you to any servos greater than say 3km apart.
Go to a BP wrecker and pick up one of those big cylindrical style "tow" tanks with extra wheels.

I notice the flywheel (i think it is anyway) has a ring gear attached. Id like to see the starter motor . I thought engines like these are air started?

Thanks for the replies.
In all honesty, I was a bit worried initially, as I thought it "may" be a bit high for the engine bay of the 'Rolla. That, and the fact that it could mildly affect the handling...But having read the post about the AE86 conversion (and I take this at proper "face value"), I am reassured that it is a good conversion to do.
Karl, re: the upgrade comments you made, I'm a little confused as to the most important point you raised:
Exactly what type of sticker should I get to make the project work? Should I get more than one? Is it O.K to mix and match brands, such as Greddy, TRD, Mugen, Type R etc? (It's really important that it passes engineering first time 'round!)
As for tyres, I was planning on upgrading to a set of 175/65R14s all-round. Will they provide the required traction? Or is this overkill, and should I perhaps go for something "saner"?

some say that one is enough, but thats only if you get an engineer from penrith, im which case you will definitely need a ford/holden/mopar/"ute" type of sticker.
Anywhere else and the more the merrier, only being sure to avoid previously mentioned names. TRD mixed with MUGEN is good, maybe with the odd HKS here and there to create special "structural points", like across the bonnet to the front guard.
Tyres - for this conversion, the 14" are waaaay too big. Sick with the TRD 12" "Steelies", and some 145 rubber to really lay some phat treads.
Don't forget fixed reclined seats - they are a MUST with any conversion.

well if you need it engineered i'll be able to do it for $5, just wait a year until my course is finished!
oh and for stickers the TRD added 50kw but the mugen and type-R only added .05kw together

O.K.
Project is now "taking shape"
I know I need the following items.
1 x KE10 Corolla
2 x permanently reclined bucket seats (Can you get these pre-done at different "lean angles" - I'm trying for a really cool, laid-back look; say 75 degrees?)
4 x 12" steel wheels (great cost-saving here, as these are OEM fitment, allowing retention of OEM brakes...Engineer should have no worries there).
4 x 145 tyres (pref cross-ply) for the ultimate in all-round performance - ie. street/strip.
A number of stickers (TRD predominantly, as these apparently add more power than most others combined! )
A sticker for the back window which reads "Get in, sit Down, shut up, and hold on" (Much like the many Excel performance cars one sees around).
Now, am I right in thinking the standard drive-line components will be up to the job? ie. K40 gearbox, borg warner rear end etc? Or should I go all out and source some top-quality, unbreakable parts, such as those fitted to, for example, VN Commodores or EA falcons?
(Damn, this thing is so close to being done I can almost taste it!)

To help with the weight distribution i propose that you relocate the battery to the boot im sure that Karl can help you out with the electrics and some new speaker wire for the leads to the engine.

heh heh, it's alreay turbocharged, but you could twin charge it
hmm, regarding those 4.5" rims, do you think that the increase in weight from 0.7 tons to ..... 2300.7 tons would allow you to go bigger than 6" wide rims??
ypu might need a small 'power bugle' on the bonnet also....

What sized exhaust tip are you gonna run on it?
And you might want to upgrade the alternator, you're gonna have a fair bit of power draw with the necessary neons

Weight distribution shouldn't be an issue, so long as you mount The Most Fuli Sik Aww Mah Gawd sound system in the boost, I mean boot..
