Hi,
I had my engine camry sv21 3sfe engine rebuilt a year ago with new rings, headgaskets etc etc. Since then i have had a ticking sound and through a lot of asking q's people have said the valves are not shimmed right so i want to know if its dangerous to leave it and what does something like this cost to do. Im no mechanic i have no idea.

Thanx any Help is Appreciated

if theyre ticking, that simply means the tolerance is over spec - this will not cause any harm to the engine whatsoever, so it isnt a time critical fix (just an annoying sound)

pretty much any mechanic should be able to do it, tho the toyota SST will make life easier and quicker (and thus cheaper for you). if extra/new shims are needed (ie your existing ones cant just be swapped around) count on about +$14 per shim plus labour. the 5sfe isnt too dicky, but count on 3hrs atleast

Thanx for the help ed(sorrY but whats SST?), is this normal to happen after a rebuild I saw another guy on supra forums have the same thing happen after a rebuild, do you have to check the valves after a rebuild?. The Mechanic that rebuilt the engine for me has been a mechanic for 40 years and used to build v8 drag car engines for 6sec rail drag cars so i thought he would have known.

actually, i believe the hammer is SST #101
and isnt that GT kit used to remove suspension or hub parts?

(SST = special service tool)

and no, you wouldnt expect shim clearances to be all screwy soon after a rebuild, unless care wasnt taken to get them all *just right*

maybe also check that its not an injector?

Actually you might, particularly as the valve beds into the seat, although this would cause a narrower clearance rather than a wider one.

No i dont think its injectors,
its a more metalic tapping sound. As i said jesterday i used a higher viscosity oil Penrite HPR40 25W70, and its a lot quieter now but still there. I used to fill up at this dodgy cheap petrol station nearly for the whole life of the car, it was close to my place and very cheap petrol, the car ran quite fine I THOUGHT, but my mates with a worked v8 and r32 skyline tried it and there car ran like shit, now i run vortex gold all day every day and am shocked at how much smoother and faster the car runs. Can anyone tell me how can i get info in changing a fuel filter?.

thanx
