Car Advice

Hey all,
I'm almost 18, and I am looking at getting my second car.
I am trying to choose between an 86-87 Celica SX and an '89 Pulsar SSS.
I've heard that the SSS's go harder than the Celicas, but I don't know if that would be true or not.
I have upto about 6 grand to play with, so if anyone could give me some advice, that would be good.
I currently drive an '84 non-turbo Charade, so pretty much anything more than a moped would be an improvement.
Cheers,
Daniel.

What exactly do you want out of a car? there is a fair bit of difference between them. ie 2 Door vs 4 door
the SSS would be the quicker but the Celica Is a Toyota
I expect the only answer You'll get off these forums is the Celica.
Think about How long you'll expect to keep the car and then think about what you requirments out of a car will be for that period of time. Being 18 You'll enjoy just crusing for the next few years. Somthing that looks good on the cruise?
Unless you have only 1 mate is a 4 door more suited?
are you after power?
are you after luxury?
Do you intend on working as a tradesperson and need to carry shit?
Do you intend on modifying it?
or are you after an out of the box finished product?
Think about these few points and see where you end up
Personally I would say the Celica with some minor performance mods.(Note: A monster Tacho ISN'T a performance mod!)

I spose all I want is a car that will do me for a few years. I want to get into the RAAF next year, so i won't need it for tradesman purposes or anything.
I like the look of the Celica better, plus new wheels and etc. I was looking at the SSS because of the fact that you can get a newer car, that goes harder for cheaper.
I suppose that I would say that I would be after power moreso than luxery, but luxery does come into it a bit. As I said before, I like the look of the Celica better, especially with wheels and lowered (looks better when cruising).
I would intend on modifying the car to an extent, pretty much keep the stock engine, but maybe ad a K&N pod filter and put a better exhaust on.
Cheers,
Daniel

Personally I think that model Pulsar is kind of ugly, I'd never choose it over the much nicer Celica shape.
The difference in speed wouldn't be huge either, the SSS barely has any more if any more power...what is it, 103kW to 105kW? I can't imagine the Pulsar being much lighter if any.
The Celica was touted in its day as being one of the best handling FWD's, I've never heard anyone say that about the Pulsar.
Luxury wise, the ST162 is a nice car, power windows, air-conditioning, nice seats...personally its a much nicer car.

In that case I'd say a Celica, For that sort of money you could pick up a Celica in good nick or a SSS that has been thrashed.
I think the interior specs are very similar (power windows etc)
A nice exhaust, Intake, window tint, lower slightly and some nice rims. You'll have a package that will turn heads.

Mmmmm nice, pity about the Klm's add dark tint to that and....
I had a quick look at SSS vs Celicas of that year
Celica - 143,000 = $7000
Celica - 177,000 = $7500
SSS Pulsar - 270,000 = $9990
All dealer cars, You'll get a better celica for your money.
Maybe beat the owner of that one down and do a quick engine swap for a fresh engine??

89 (N13) pulsar SSS' will be slower than the celica. You'd have to get an N14 (92 onwards) Pulsar to beat an ST162 Celica SX. Get a celica.

I've already beaten him down by 800 bucks . He says that the engine is in mint condition, but the other problem is that the car is in Victoria and I'm in SA. But when you want something bad enough........
I'm gonna have to see what happens with it. Also, a dark tint would go down quite nicely .
If I did need to replace the engine, how much would I be looking at? (sorry, I don't really know much about toyota engines, all i know is that it has 3S-GE engine in it.)
And finally, would the late 80 model celicas beat my mate's stock '84 turbo EXA?
Cheers,
Daniel.

depends whaty condition his exa is in - my stock '84 celica was neck and neck with a friend's '84 (n12) exa turbo - but his engine was shagged. the exas are pretty quick (relatively), so Idont really like your chances.

You could drive it around for awile on the current engine and save for a 3sgte. I don't know alot about the FWD Celicas but that engine at least will go in. if you want more info on the swap use the search feature for 3sgte into st162 (celica) this swap has been done a few times buy people on these forums so you'll get an idea of how much and the difficulties involved.
BTW in case you don't know the "t" in 3sgte means Turbo

An St-162 GT-4 (2lt 4wd turbo) will beat the exa! But then you have to pay for turbo insurance etc etc.
Still, yahoo motorsport have at GT-4 coming soon for $4800. Then you have to get it inspected and registered.
Just keeping those options open!

I say go the Celica, it's a better package. It's not a grocery getter with a bit of power like the pulsar, it's a purpose built sports car.
And 270,000 k's isn't really that much on modern jap engines. Just consider it run in.
I had an MX-6 turbo with 277,000 k's. It blew a little bit of smoke on startup, but apart from that it took 12psi all day every day and my spirited driving. Fantastic car, fantastic engine and t was a SOHC 12 valve, as far as longevity goes, the Celica would be even better than the MX6.

Depends, my brother had a turbo exa with mods and it ran 13s, but generally turbo exas are relitively quick
