MA61 shocks Thu, 13 November 2003 03:10 Go to next message
Hi all,

I'm not having much luck tracking down shocks for my Supra. I just spoke to GSA suspension and they claim KYB's are no longer available for MA61's, but they'd be glad to sell me a set of Koni's for almost a grand. Koni's are nice and everything but I'm not willing to spend that much on my daily hack! On the other hand, I don't want cheap crap like Monroe's... something middle-of-the-road would suit me better.

So has anyone else bought MA61 shocks recently? If so, what did you get and how do they perform?

Considering the power you've got under your right foot, I'd say the Konis would be a good idea!!!
Why install such a good transplant and cheap out on what helps put it to the ground?

Do it. You'll love yourself for it! Laughing

Re: Monroe GT or Pedders shocks? Thu, 23 October 2003 14:48

Just some update prices for MA61 shocks (in Adelaide) ;

Koni
Front : Red Units (adjustable when fully compressed) $225 each
Rear : As above but $130 each
Wouldn't give me part numbers, some Secret Squirrel shit ?

KYB
Front : 365001 - $101.50 each + GST
Rear : 343042 - $52.50 each + GST
Rear : KG4767 - $63.35 each + GST (but ex Syd only, so an extra $14 for freight for us in Adelaide)

Draven, how do these prices and part numbers compare with the ones you got ?

I had a pair of Koni Sport on the rear of my RA23 and they weer pretty good, but at $710 for Koni's compared to $310 for the KYB, are they that much better ?

Cheers

Michael B

Well, this is all very interesting. I was quoted $164 each for the fronts, and $82 for the rears. Methinks it's time to shop around for a more reasonable price!

Seems strange they wouldn't sell me the KYB's if they're still available? Maybe they make more profit selling Koni's!

While you're at it, give these guys a go too. They were the cheapest that I found when I was looking for Konis.

Re: MA61 shocks Thu, 13 November 2003 04:14 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Thanks for the response guys. I'm not really interested in Koni's so I won't be chasing a price for them. I know they're great and I'd love a set, but it won't fit in the budget so that's the end of the story. Trust me, anything is better than what I have now, even (dare I say it) Monroe's!

Anyway, I took the advice above and called Beaurepairs in Stafford. The bloke looked up the KYB part numbers, confirmed they were available, and ordered them for me on the spot. This is in contrast to GSA who dicked me around for 2 weeks, promised to call me back 4 times and never did, gave me a crappy price ($70 up on what Beaurepairs quoted), and in the end they couldn't even get what I wanted! Bloody hopeless. Mad

Anyway, the final price was $425 for the set which seems quite reasonable to me. I'm sure you can get them cheaper elsewhere but I'm beyond caring; I just want some shocks already! Fingers crossed I'll have them on Saturday. Smile

What part numbers Norbs ?

Yes anything is better than Monroe. At the moment, I have Ga(y)briel ones in the rear and Monroe in the front Confused Confused Confused

Need to get decent springs as well

Cheers

Michael B

$425 - $100 more than what I was quoted. Will be interesting to compare what the part numbers and individual prices are Smile

You were right... thanks for the info. Smile

Michael: my quote included GST so the difference isn't that big.

Greg: you're telling me!

I'll post part numbers etc after I pick them up. I also have a set of Kings springs on the way; they were $90 each, and again I'll post part numbers when I have them.

dont waste your money when you can just :

http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/loats/technical/ma61 /ra60assembly.html

Pull apart clean, replace the top bush and then get what ever hardness shock oil you want from a motorbike shop or get the valves changed

then just get the expencive ones for the back

mans got a point Rolling Eyes

seriously tho... theres nothing in the stock shock assembly that isnt reminiscent of even the very best motocross forks. and all these guys do is play with oil weight and shim stacks. theres zero reason why the same approach cant be taken to strut tuning (admitedly, forks area a lot easier to access to service than struts).

it blows me away how much places charge for what is really a VERY basic assembly.

Hi Allen,

Good idea about rebuilding/oiling the RA60 shocks, but what weight oil ? How much oil ?

For me, the cost of obtaining the RA60 shocks, disassembly, cleaning, reassemble, and purchase of oil is pretty close to the $220 that NEW KYB's would cost me. Very Happy

With a 15 month old running around the house, time is a very rare commodity at the moment !!! Crying or Very Sad

Still worth considering though

start with say 25wt non foaming, and just wing it. see what the compression and rebound rates are like, then adjust (bit of a PITA). fill to say 1.5" deep OVER the top of the piston assembly at full extension.

you can also play with the dia of the piston ports, as well as shim the compression and rebound valve plates.

if youre really keen, you can drill and tap the piton ports, and place gub screws in the ports for some 'ful sik crazy' adjustability

Like I said, way too much arsing about. About 3 hours O/T on a Sunday and their paid for. TFE. Koni's take a little longer Very Happy

That, and whilst I know a few things, getting the rebound and damping characteristics right is more than I'm capable of. Look at the lengths that the V8 Supercar teams go to.

It is more than a pain to rip the struts out and replace the shocks with known units, let alone ripping them out multiple times Shocked

funny you should say that ed - if my current kybs are not tough enough up front, I was going to get some oil ones - and I think you just found me the perfect candidate

Hmmmm. Interesting comment Draven. What front shock part numbers did you end up fitting ? What rate and brand springs did you fit ?

Maybe the Koni adjustable are a better option then Confused

It will be interesting to hear Norbs comments after he fits his ?

Fit a drain and fill plug to the outer strut shell

I used cheapo engine oil in some ra40 struts that worked really well even with the floged out top bush Smile (the top bush is what causes the stock ones to go "soft")

Thanks for that Draven.

Just spoke to Toperformance in Melbourne, and they wouldn't give me a price, but gave me the part no. for Koni Sport Fronts (Yellow). Then I had to ring our local supplier...

Price for the 8641-1319Sport is $250 each incl GST. These are the externally adjustable units.

They apparently don't make a Sport unit for the rear, but the local branch here came up with a Koni red unit (adjustable but has to be compressed first) for $130 each.

Cheers
