KE30 front strut + shock upgrade

I want to upgrade my old KE30 front strut with
gas shockies and bigger discs, as I am wanting to rally it.
What sort of options do I have?
Will the AE86 struts fit without too much trouble
and if so can they be upgraded to gas shocks?
Thanks.

Grab some Celica struts and use them I've used RA40 stuff regularly, but you could use anything after mid 1973). While you have the struts out, reinforce the chamber, and triangulate the stub axle area, as you will bend these on the first stage! The AE86 struts are smaller and therefore weaker than the Celica items.

Thanks for the info!
BTW, I may sound dumb but what do you mean by "triangulate the stub axle area"?

Cut and weld Triangular pieces of steel into the stub axle to strut area (a Triangle is the strongest shape you can make). you'll also need to weld Corolla sized spring mounts onto the strut as the Celica one's will be too big for the strut tower.

OK you lost me, were exactly is the stub axle?
Do you mean weld triangle pieces from the strut tower to the chassis or on top of the tower?

You need to buy a workshop manual and start reading. The stub axle is at the bottom of the strut and is the spindle that the wheel bearings run on. You'll need to take the rotating parts of the assembly into account when adding the gussets, or pay someone to do it for you (hint nudge wink!).

Best option for you would be to rock up to one of the local rallies and start asking questions, the downside to this step being the lack of rallies at this time of year?! Plenty of guys here in Perth are running Corollas in many different classes, and a multitude of budgets. Call CAMS for rally details, and dates.

Sorry for stealing the thread, but clintgodde, would you know which celica struts can be fitted to a ke20? and 555 i have a magazine with a ke30 which uses ra60 front struts and brakes, but you will have to do the strut top and spring seat switch.

is the strut top and spring seat switch difficult?
BTW thanks for the info clintgodde and rotorrace!

I think checking out other peopes rally cars is a good idea
I might do that the next chance I get.

RA40 struts go into a KE20 without too much drama, and checking out other people's cars and seeing how they perform is a good free way to work out what works, and what doesn't.

hey...just looking through this thread...
i've come to realise...clintgodde seams to be a pretty switched on kinda fella...
why dont _555_ go and see clintgodde...and clintgodde could explain to him, and show him, exactly what he's talking about.
i mean... you both live in Perth, and Perth aint that big of a place...(i used to live near Midland and Kelmscott )
maybe even clintgodde could make _555_ some struts up, for a fee, of course..???
dont mean to put you in the shit, clintgodde...
if _555_ wants to pay for postage, i could go and buy some struts, and modify them...etc...

Yep, I could do all that, however you seem to forget that Perth is full of people who say one thing and fail to do it, or do something else after organising it. At the end of the day, I don't care about those type of people - I'm busy with toys of my own!

Thnx

ma60 struts would also require ma60 steering arms/ackerman arms.
the bolt spacing on the bottom of the strut to bolt to the steering arms is different, about 5mm more on the ma60 than ke30.

So if I get the steering arms/ackerman arms with, I can put the struts under the ke30.
And is the ma60 strut longer than the ke30 one, or shorter???
Because I want a cheap unograde to lower my ke30, i hope the ma60 struts will lower it by far.

it will raise it, and the fact the springs wont fit in the strut tower may cause some issues

555, if you want to rally it, Ring Andrew Vibert (CVAP-. forum sponsor) as he did run one of these and won the Vic state championship P3 class in '03, it was a real animal of a car. So I would base the car on his setup as it's been proven even though it ran a 2TG.
Personally, The Hilux-pug-corona brake set would be my choice, though any of the celica setups do work well, done a couple of streeter using TA22's which were a big improvement over the stockers... Guy's which was the celica with vented front brakes... RA60 or 65? which ever ones they are, this would be second choice for this application.
Also if you are going to run full on rally's adjustable coil overs should also be a must as many times you'll need to raise and lower the car that extra few inches to get better ground clearance... over here 2GO is renowned for being rough as buggery, so we raise it, while bega being really smooth, we lower it.
really good shocks, ie Koni yellow, Bilstien are usually a minimum, but these need to be order with the correct valving to suit spring rates etc for the application on hand. Generally the more bound and rebound control, the better.
Also, being a pre-86 model, the rules are have many more freedoms to the car we run.
