Its a hotly contested issue.

Some say they have removed it and found no less of low RPM torque, some say that it has suffered.

I'm of the opinion that Toyota aren't idiots, and they stuck it there for a reason.

I'm rebuilding my 3SGTE at the moment and I'll be leaving the TVIS in. Partly because my engine won't be extreme (only around 280-290HP) and I will be running standard ECU and turbo.

The GT4 is a heavy car, so in my view, for a road car, you need every bit of low end torque you can get to retain good driveability.

If I was aiming for 400HP+, with aftermarket ECU and turbo and maximum flow capacity was my goal, then I'd gut it. Probably cause it wouldn't be a daily driver so its behaviour at less than <4000rpm wouldn't concern me.

It's a bit different between the 4AGE & 3SGTE, on being turbo & the other N/A, it's generally accepted to ditch it when turboing the 4A. It would prolly still funtion relatively well on a low boost setup, but not many people bother with those these days.
The main problem with trying to figure out the best setup is the costs of the research, it's not quite something most people can do in the backyard, & your intake developement budget will prolly be a bit less than toyotas.
I would say keep it until you're pushing out say 25-30% more power than standard, otherwise it would be an interesting thing to look into.

"I'm of the opinion that Toyota aren't idiots, and they stuck it there for a reason. "

But they did remove it from the Gen III design.

I experimented with the tvis on the dyno and it made no difference to power levels on a stock CT26 (18psi) as even pin pointing when tvis was activated in the rev range was difficult to see. With the GT turbo however it was a different story. The power output still remained the same but came on boost 400rpm earlier when tvis was disactivated. To me the runners on the 185 manifold is where the bottle neck is and the tvis has trouble activating in time with laggy units that come on boost suddenly.

Dont go out of your way to remove it but if your doing a rebuild then go for it.

Has anyone removed TVIS from a 4age. I wonder if that makes a big difference?
