Do Dog engagment gearboxes (straight cut) need the clutch to be used on every gearchange or is it only when shifting down?

not all dog boxes are straight cut, but if you go to the effort of making a dog box, then you are probably looking for ten-tenths and need to reduce friction losses in the box.
to be honest you don't need to use the clutch for a normal gearbox, but it means that you don't need to rev match if you use the clutch.
with a race car, you have lightened engine bits, so the revs drop quickly, and as the dog bits are very strong, you can just shove the gear in.
if you do that with a normal box, you are more likely to break the teensy bits that match the gears speed....
a few bike buddies hardly ever use the clutch on their bikes except when stopping and starting off..

You don't actually need the clutch.
Say you do 3500 rpm at 60 in 3rd... You can pull it out of 4th without the clutch, take the revs up to 3500 and slot it straight into third as if it was a hot knife in butter.

u cant just slam it back and forth, it just wont work, u have to pull it out of gear, then give iut slight rev and it'll just nicely slot it, when u do got for the shift it may not go, just lightly let it off and try again, quickly tho, not 1 every 3 seconds, and keep tapping the throttle to alter the speed lightly, if u ram it home it'll crunch

This sort of thing is hell on the synchros, unless you rev-match it PERFECTLY every single time, which is basically impossible. Synchro boxes just aren't designed for this sort of treatment!

No it's not good for boxes, but it's something you SHOULD be able to do if you've got a vague inkling of how to drive a car. Surprising how many people find it impossible to learn though

I got to get through 10 gears each time I have to take off in Kenworth truck, only use the clutch twice, to put it in first and to take it up or down range on the splitter box.
Most times I am lazy and don't use the clutch in the car either.
Just let the engine rev drop back it self on the up shift by taking a 1 sec or so to shift it, and give it a little rev on the down shift.
Once you have done a few times it comes natural
