wiring a 4age alternator Sun, 16 November 2003 01:20 Go to next message
can anyone help me with wiring a 4age alternator for an ae86? the diagrams in the gallery are a bit confusing.

i have the following wires on the alternator:

white - i think this goes to a nut located on the alternator, but where does that go?

yellow
black/yellow
- can i wire these to where the 4ac alternator plugged up? or does it have to go through the ecu/main relay?

also, do i need to keep the ingrims regulator thing which was on the 4ac?

the 4age alternator has an internal regulator - so you can piss off the external regulator on your strut tower.

I don't think i have mine perfectly wired up, but it charges none-the-less,... just my charge light is permanently on?

I will investigate it further when i have time.

I just did this in my Sprinter. (Assuming ZE alt = GE alt)

Basically your current alternator has a bunch of wires out. The fat white one (or maybe two of them) on the spike is the 12V generated. The rest go to your voltage regulator on the strut tower.

The voltage regulator will also have 3 other wires coming out of it. These wires need to be reconnected to the internal regulator of your new alternator. They "should" be the same colours coming out of the ae86 regulator and on the 4AGE alt plug. Once you've reconnected all these wires you'll realise that you have nothing plugged into the regulator so you can turf it.

The external regulator also has a fat white 12V feed, this can be removed too.

It was a bit of a hassle to get my head around, but wasn't hard to do once I got it worked out. If you need more help I could scan an ae86 wiring diagram for you, but it would take a while.

thanks, i was playing around with it on sunday arvo.. poking wires at things and hoping it would charge and it worked.
i just matched up the wires from the alt.plug to the reg.plug..
but on the diagram in the gallery it shows, ignition switch, fuses, etc. can i 'assume' the factory body loom is already wired up as such?
are you keeping a/c? just curious if the 4ac pulleys will line up without any modification.
