In particular a 7M-GTE will be a bolt in option I believe (or very close to it)!
With a bit of work almost anything is an option! 1UZ / 1J / 2J

thanks for the input ed, the phrase you seem to have missed is 'bolt in'
yes i did a search of '4m bolt in' '4m conversion' '4m swap' yet there were no results.
thankyou wilbo666 for your input, i will have a look around!

around here, 'bolt in' can mean anything from an rb25dett into a ta22, to a 5me into a ma61...
as wilbo suggested then: 7mgte
quite a bit of fiddling, but as close to 'bolt in' (to your definition) as youre likely to get

Or if he doesn't want to get that carried away, a 5M-GE or 6M-GE will go in much easier but still be a very decent upgrade over a 4M. Worth considering anyway.

Pick of the bunch is the 7MGTE. 5/6/7MGE would all be worthwhile upgrades.
Anything JZ would be good too, but none of them could be rated as "bolt in".

IMHO 5m-ge 6m-ge are all way too old and rare now days with 7m-ge's being so common, only issue with 7m-ge's is lack of service causing all the cams to get scored up and BHG®
but find a serviced 7m with a bhg tidy it up chuck a new gasket in and should be good for another 200,000km

I'm about to put a 7Mge into a crown with a 4M your welcome to come over and have a look mid conversion. Anything M is ( bolt in)
however the J's or a 1UZ would be nice
