I thought this question would be best answered by real drivers
So, what is it? And why?

Need For Speed Underground
Cause u can mod ur Jap car with real mods from real companies.
All the cars are registered so there are no weird names for cars u know are called something else.
U can go for Drift, Drag or Circut mode.
Graphics are fantastic.

Worst game ever , edgy controls , unrealistic " powersliding " , unrealistic speed effects , and a whole bunch of shiny crap including the cars , the road , the side houses , everything.

best racing game is initial d ver. 2 at the arcade, coz it feels like your doing something instead of sitting at your computer or tv ;D
apart from that it chews your money too.

Without a doubt I'd say Gran Turismo, so many tweaks you can do to the car and the physics are real enough that you can really affect the way the car handles by your driving style.

What about the best steering wheel? For console.
I liked the steering wheel of Initial D Arcade because it was big.

Initial d drifting is very very unrealistic. Gutters are way too grippy. You speed unaffected by hitting walls e.t.c. Unrealistic amount of grip downhill.
Most realistic drift arcade game i may say is Battle Gear 3.
Not out in alot of places. But a melbourne arcade center has the top 5 scores in the world in 3 of the tracks!
Apart from that. Skillfull and realistic drift comes from gt3. Although hard its possible. Puts the element of skill in drift. Best off buying a good steering wheel for your PS2

gran turismo series definately
i like initial D but i can see its not very realistic and i prefer games where you actually have to use the brake around most corners
