Airflow meter problems.

I have airflow meter problems (I think).
The engine light keeps coming on, and my car likes to vary it's revs quite a bit. The idle revs vary from 1100 to 600. Also sometimes when I put the clutch in the revs will just drop, and keep dropping until the car stalls. Is this an airflow meter problem??? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Oh, and for those of you who dont know, it's a 7mgte.

i thought that AFM's just have a switch for idle and it doesn't actually deflect? (not much air going in)
varying idle speed can often be an air leak, either from cracked pipes, vacuum lines, or from manifold gaskets... check your spark plugs, if one cylinder looks lean, ti could be a manifold leak (i had this recently.. 2 leaks, 0.5mm by 10mm where manifold gasket got blown out)
good luck searchin,
Cya, Stewart

A leak in the intake pipe (after the AFM) gave me similar problems till I found it.
Gaffer tape solved it

Ok, I have another dumb question. How were you able to find the leak??? Could you feel it when you revved the car in neutral?

carefully dribble soapy water over the plastic pipes (but not onto the spankin' hot turbo housings and other ow-thats-goddam-hot metal castings) and look for bubbles.
or make simply stethascope out of plastic hose (stuff one end in your ear, prevent helpers from yelling in other end) and mnove end around varisous engine bits until hissing sound found.

Ah. Good thoughts. Thanks for that. Will try the soapy water trick tonight (or tomorrow depending on when I get a chance).
