T50 gearbox noise, need help Mon, 17 November 2003 10:55 Go to next message
When the clutch is pressed in (to the floor) everything is ok but when the clutch is released there is a noise that when i first heard it sounded like a release bearing was shot, So i got it replaced.

But the noise is still there, the person who did the release bearing work suggest the input shaft bearing on the gearbox is shot.

Got the bearings replaced, noise was quieter for about 200kms and know the noise is back and person who did the gearbox says that the release bearing is shot.

Is there anything else it could be or is this the ways sprinter gearboxes are.

Sounds like an input shaft bearing, but if you've already replaced that, then its a bit strange. Does it happen when stationery with the clutch in/out? If so, nothing else in the box is moving, so it shouldnt really be anything else Confused

you might be on the money greg - but maybe check if there is a spigot bush!! if not that's why the input shaft bearing is failing

Im not even sure what a spigot bush is. (silly me)

Is the release bearing and spigot 2 different things, as i was under the impression it was a case of "same thing different name".

Where can i get info on spigot bushes.

spigot bush (typically a "6001" bearing) goes into the back of the crank - the snout of the input shaft pushes into it. only the 86kw rwd motors have them stock, any other 4age you have to fit it.

The motor was only rebuilt 5000kms ago, would this bush have been in with the gasket kit or is it brought seperate.

Whats involved in changing a spigot bush.

No you have to buy the spigot bearing seperately, should only cost around $6 or there about. To remove it pack grease behind the bush (into where the input shaft would go). don't get any on the flywheel insert a close fitting bolt to go in the hole and hit the bolt with hammer. Hydraulic pressure will drive it out. This is a bit slow and would recommend being very careful, don't want to have a spigot bearing hit you in the eye or anything. Another way is get a slide hammer pull it out that way. To fit it get an old socket or bit of steel that fits over the outside of the bearing and drive it flush with the crank

fkn16v - the spigot ain't part of a rebuild kit and its common for them to be left out. like T says - if the spigot bush ain't there - there is a good chance thats why the input shaft bearing failed dude. what happens is the input shaft (the real small part on the end) sits in the bearing and the bearing supports the shaft. otherwise, you'd end up with the main shaft moving up and down/all over the place, and, eventually destroying your input shaft bearing.

removing it, if you use a slide hammer it will get destroyed, so, go to yota and get another one (they cost stuff all) - just specify an ae71 w/4AC and T50 and this will suit (mine did and i'm using a 100kw motor)
