eh!
it would help in such a situation.
You need to test whether or not there is power at the points!

Well are you positive the battery has full power.
Put a wire between terminals for a big spark, but that wont determine if it has 12V's or not.
Take the same test wire and place it on the positve side of the points ignition and run the other side to the body of the car, see if you can get it to spark.
But make sure you test the wire PRIOR to the points to avoid massive voltage and electric shock! And it will only have power when the key is turned to IGN.
If this sparks, then you have power at the points........make sure you have checked ALL your fuses!

You should be carefull what you suggest to people, he's been playing with fuel and you tell him to do some arc welding on his battery terminals. No offence but some people dont understand the risks involved is all.

best thing to do is take the thin wire that goes to the dizzy (if its a points dizzy)
and touch it on and off an earth quickly this should trigger the coil
take the coil hi tension lead and sit it near an earth
when u trigger the the coil it should spark out of the hi tension lead
if this doesnt work u either have no batt power to coil or the dizzy wire to coil has a cut in it
if u dont understand how to do this take it to someone who does

it was late and i wasnt thinking, which is why i posted the second message.
If he doesnt have a multimeter there isnt really too much you can do to be positive without doing something risky.

phil,
make a simple test lamp out of spare bulb (with fitting) and two wires (wrap base of bulb in insulating tape to prevent accidental shorts).
then test for presence of 12V from power wire feeding ignition (before ballast resistor) towards dizzi.
maybe you've disturbed something like:
-wires to/from ballast resister
-wires to noise suppresor at coil (if you have one)
-wires to points
-wire from points to capacitor at dizzi
no spark at coil suggests the points arn't triggering, hence problem lays between there and coil.
if you manually open/close point with a screw driver, do you get a small arc across the points? if not then no power to points, and/or cap at points not working.
oh, check earths too

fixed, it was a bad earth, {COOL1's speciality }
cost $20 including $5 excess for RACQ
when my tacho wire was on the - of the coil it was shorting the coil and killing all power TOO, so i 2 problems
