I had the same problem on saturday.

I'm using the factory sensor (different engine though). Its been fine up till now.

And what it was doing was going hot-warm-normal-hot-warm-normal-etc.

Even coasting along idling. Then even coasting along with the engine OFF. hot-warm-normal ...

I think I've got another water temperature sensor somewhere. I'll try that.

Thug: Have you got a spare sensor you could swap and try?

Sideshow: The plug on the sensor, how well does that need to be on? My plug is a 1 wire connector and it kinda sits on, but can be wobbled by hand.

its not overheating cos when i stop the temp goes down Confused

it goes normal warm hot warm normal etc... and no i dont have a spare sensor to try :S

If the car was overheating wouldnt it stay on HOT when i was stopped?

Ive only had the car for a few days but today is the only day it has done it.

Any ideas? im hoping its not the head gasket cos i just got it n dont want it off the road yet :S

will it be safe to drive it home from work? (50kms at 80kph) or wll i have to stop and let the guage go back to normal just in case like i did on the way to work when i noticed it?

oh yeah, and its a bloody 7mgte Confused im thinking i really should just do a 2jz swap Razz

i had the same problem on saturday, i think that the 1g should be able to handle heat better than a 2t, so im thinking the guage in the celica is more senceitive than that of the supra

ao when its reading half its realy not half, but lower

hows the theory sound?

i'd seriously think about getting a seperate gauge, even if just to check what is going on..... you can get pretty cheap remote sensor ones... even VDO on ebay for $45 + 10 for sensor i think... Pricols are even cheaper and almost as good... when you start mixing and matching sender/gauge, hard to tell what going on..
also if there is any crud on the sender surface insulating it from the temp, or crud on the threads (since it gorunds thru the thread to the block), it may have probs... might be worth pulling the sesnor out, cleaning it and the hole, and whacking it back in....

has to be a bad earth Razz LOL

OR... is your fluid level in the engine OK? if the sensor sees steam, it will climb off the gauge.

Steaming sensor will also leave coating of corrosion/crap on sensor and will affect temp readings.

whats fluid level level like in radiator?

can you take sensor out and put business in a cup (one of insulated coffee mugs) of fresh boiling water and see if gauge reads around the normal mark?

if you're really worried, drive very sedately and rotate radiator cap so it's loose (holds no pressure, stops water splashing everywhere, keeps temp to about 100C) until you get a new sensor (or pinch one from the wreckers).

I have had this on my 4AFC motor. Got worse after a while and car started to stall at irregular intervals. Swapped clusters and sensors and all that stuff but still had problem. I laughed at all the advice to the effect that it was an earthing problem because I thought I had checked them all - but it was. There are a couple of wires coming out of the loom under the carby and attached by a bolt into the driver's side of the inlet manifold. Is hard to see as there is lots of other stuff in the way. Thought I had found all the earths but eventually found this little sucker after advice from the author of a previous thread that I backtracked. Tightened this bolt up and problem went away. If you can't find these wires, there is an earthing wire from the driver's side strut tower to the inlet manifold. Follow that and look near where it is attached to see where the other wires join.
