20v vs 16v AE86 Conversion$$$ Difference

I've heard a lot about 20v conversions in ae86 chassis not being worth the extra cost/trouble over a 16v conversion. In your experience guys, how expensive is the difference? Assuming that I will go the bash/cut firewall option as opposed to A/M DLI etc.
Thanks guys! Ren

why would you bash and cut the firewall and make the car illigal and never again be able to gain registration in any state?
In my opinion the 20V is not worth the extra cost over the 16V.
for the money saved put a 16V in and get some cams and a decent exhaust and it would be a far better ride.

Thanks for the reply's....
....I've read on various 20v conversion guides, that you need to bash or cut the firewall to fit in the dizzy unless you use aftermarket ignition setup (DLI?). I've seen many Japanese Tuning Shop efforts with holes in the firewall covered in Dynamat etc.
I certainly couldn't afford aftermarket ignition parts on top of the conversion.
SIMON RX7- Thanks for letting me know that the firewall mods are illegal. I thought it must be because of structure blah blah. Fair enough. So does that mean that all legal conversion use Aftermarket ignition?
Does the 16v respond well to cam/exhaust etc modifications? That's why I thought the 20v would be a good idea....because of the extra hp. I've heard of a lot of people being disappointed at the results of tuning N/A engines reliably in terms of bang for buck.

the Crank angle sensor is located at the back of a FWD motor..
there ARE kits that allow you to run the CAS off the front pully.. but not cheap!
BTW 16 V's sound better

the 20V is a highly overrated motor, The 16 is a much stronger motor in terms of torque and power bands once warmed up.
For example.. my old 16 V put out 190 Hp with some head work, cams, ecu and exhaust. a 20v is much harder to work with to achieve high power levels

So your 16v responded quite well to the mods then? The figure you achieved (190hp)......I would be really happy to have that much power in my 86. Can you let me know exactly what mods you had? Cheers mate

Just a note, from reading that other thread, it sounds like you need to run A/M comp for the quads on 16v, so that would add a fair bit of money to the conversion/mods.

well considering you need an A/M computer anyway if your doing the 20V conversion.. it's still a better deal

Why couldn't I just use the stock ecu for the 20v. Considering that all other bits and pieces would be changed over from a half cut anyway. The only non factory 20v parts would be custom exhaust headers. Oh wait...I forgot about the illegality of firewall mods. So I'd need an a/m comp to run the a/m ignition business right?
