I put good because so far I've had no accidents or had any speeding fines etc. But I'd also have to say fast, because I generally sit just above the limit and have gone much faster once I found a "safe" bit of blacktop.

i put down fast as i love car club events where you get to thrash and aim for the fastest possible and when i hit the dirt roads theres no stopping me, Shocked (the eyes come on and i'm in rally mode) and still haven't had any accidents been close on the dirt a few times but managed to save it at the last minute, so i'm pretty lucky at the moment but we will see when my luck comes un done and my car is lost in between the bushes and tree's hehehe

I have to reply here cause i cant pick two. I drive very hard all of the time and i have never had an accident (touch wood!!)
I think if you be sensible and are aware of your surroundings at all times there is no excuse for accidents. (that is unless some dickhead hits you!) If you know your car and both its and your own limits and dont excede them you will be fine.

I put fast
But to be fair, "when provoked" most people would classify me as psychotic .... tho I've never had an accident while driving fast (only had 1 fender bender, and was trying to drive extra carefully)
but when you start doubling the speed limit to race someone, I guess that's dangerous (esp when the speed limit is 80...)

I put myself down for slow. As far as I'm concerned I do drive slowly, generally I try to stay less than 15 over the limit.

Mind you if there's corners I hate to be doing less than twice the recomended speed.

Come to think of it maybe I'm not such a slow driver. Oh well.

i think its stupid having those advisory speed signs on corners as all they make you want to do is try and double them or see how fast you can actually go around them. they are one thing i try and compete with.

I don't mean to sound harsh.... But god i wish i had a scanner atm.... just so i could show you guys what comes of trying to double the recomanded speed around some corners.
I have some photo's of a few nasty accidents from ppl doing just that......
I will admit i do drive fast... But it all comes down to knowing your limits and the limits of your car.... and not pushing either.
Drive safe guys.

there's a difference, some people just try to double it where some people are capable of doubling it easily by knowing the limits of there car and being able to feel what the car is doing.

as I said
yes it's a challenge, but I realise there are some places where my car just will not do that speed around a certain corner.
I enjoy pushnig myself to the very limits, and do often, but I also know what comes of going beyond your limits.

Id have to say im a cross between lucky and dangerous when provoked. Im lucky cos i dont seem to speed, but make pretty good time usually Smile
and for the dangerous bit ill just say im very prone to road fkn rage Rolling

I like testing my car, but thats only when its an empty road and i know im only going to hurt myself if i get too stupid. Other than that, im just a laid back wave rider Smile

In a perfect world, everyone would be doubling the speed limit, driving to their extreme, and not have accidents... Nod

Point I have to make is that, although you think you know the limits of yourself and your car, there will be times when you have that lapse of concentration and whallah --- accident..

that's what heppened to me... hopefully, to all you guns that double the speed limit and can control your cars - good stuff !!
just rememeber that sometimes i just takes a small glitch and it can all be over in a matter of seconds Smiley =

i agree with you Les, i have confidence that i can control my car to an extent, but i dont play if the odds are against me. Im only 20 but ive been through three cars already, and i dont want to lose another.

Be careful guys. Everyone has their bad days, and its not a question of if it will come, itss when.

fark, sory to hear that hoon Sad

I guess in a way you guys are lucky... you've had your bad experience, and hoon at least has most definitly learnt his lesson.
I haven't had that sort of experience ... but the most likely way that would happen would be someone else causing the accident with me, which is why I dont drive that crazily when there are other cars around

dont be too sure that another person will hit you. have you ever looked at a passing car for a moment, or even headchecking ur blindspot, and looked back infront just in time to avoid hitting the car in front? shit like that happens very easily... and happens to the best of us.

cheers

btw, of the three cars i lost, only two were to accidents. One just up and died Smile

when I'm travelling at those speeds, there's no need to check my blind spot.. and as I said, not while there are other cars on the road

ah ok, well 2 lost to accidents is still 2 more than I'd like to lose Smile

The recomended speed signs are good... They give you an indication of what the corner is going to be like...
Also, you may know the limits of your car but can you guarantee that someone else isn't gunna fuck up and hit you???
I always check my blind spot and my mirrors just out of habit...

Man you shouldn't be checking your blind spots and mirrors from habit, it should be what you were taught to do when you got your licence!!!

I think that the amount of training that the average driver receives, especially if they have not had control of a car before, is way to little. I mean they don't teach you to fly a plane solo in a week???

You can't really define Hard as a driving style. I think it should be classified as driving assertively or agressively. One you consider the consequences, and the other you don't.

I agree
the number of people who cheat/fluke the driving test is phenomenal
I know this because I get to watch people on their "full" liscence practice driving along my street, where there are no other cars/animals/children to worry about hitting.
At least with the new P's system it's better (in theory)

What are you talking about? He was taught to do it, and it's become habit.
Things like that, using your indicators etc should all be habits that you should be doing all the time, even in the middle of the night with no one on the road. Or in the deserted outback. Or wherever.

I totally agree with you on this, has anyone seen what you go through in Germany to get a licence?
Our whole driver training system sux the bag, bad habits get passed on from parent to child, and these bad habits just get worse over time.

EDIT: although this new Ps system is a start, but isn't nearly enough.

I was fast and a bit dangerous too. I used to thrash the shit out of my Celica all the time. After being pulled over twice in the new Celica doing pretty stupid things (a bit sideways out a street at 3am, and 120 in an 80 zone) I thought I'd better pull my head in before I get booked or have an accident. I witnessed an accident where a driver pulled out of a sidestreet and hit an oncoming car. There's nothing you can do when somebody pulls out in front of you like that. If you're speeding, you're f**ked.

What I meant was that it shouldn't be a habit, it should be part of the driving process, just like your heart pumps blood
something you do all the time, not a habit.

habit (REPEATED ACTION)= something which you do often and regularly, often without knowing that you are doing it

It shouldn't be a thing you do often, or regularly, it should be all the time, everytime, even when your not changing lanes. If its a habit, and you seem to check your blind spot, then you are not really aware that there is something there, I've seen plenty of people do it! hell I'm braking hard and I check my mirrors to see how awake the driver behind me is, geez if i can avoid getting hit from behind, to being shoved into the car in front, that just saved me a crap load!!

I'm sure thats what Rollaboy means Smile doing it by habit.

And another thing, people have know idea how to enter a freeway, or for that matter, travel safely on the freeway!!

How many people I have seen come out of the city (60k zones) to the freeway (100+k zones) and they are so close to the front car, you couldn't see the road disappear under you!! And they wonder why there are so many bumper to bumper accidents and serious accidents. Next time your on the M1 to the Gold coast, check what I mean!!

I agree bigworm
with all the adjustments they're making for "overcrowding of sydney roads" etc, they haven't looked at one big issue : everyone has a lisence
if they make having a liscence more of a privelage than a right, there'd be less cars on the road, less pollution, less car accidents

Nilezy,
I have a real problem with people not entering motorways properly. You come down (or up) the onramp and people in front of you are sitting on 50kph. The speed limit is ~100kph and that's generally what people on the motorway are doing. If you enter at 50, it's just bloody dangerous.

Re: What type of driver are you ?! Mon, 29 July 2002 09:29 Go to previous messageGo to next message
My thoughts exactly, if you dribble onto the freeway, then the person you cut off, brakes real hard, which then forces the person behind them to brake even harder, and they are so close to start with, all hell breaks loose!!! So both of them conbined is even worse than the single event!!!
Thats what i found its like here in brisbane.

In Darwin, most of the roads are above 70ks when you out of the suburbs, and they dont have freeways with easy merging lanes, you enter the 100k traffic from zero speed, so you learn that distancing yourself from the car in front is more than essential, it saves your life!!! I've seen many southern people get caught in Darwin doing exactly what they call tail-gating!!
Its so bad. Sad

Re: What type of driver are you ?! Mon, 29 July 2002 22:56 Go to previous messageGo to next message
You can be a fast driver without being a stupid one, like i drive fast but if its a blind corner where i can't see whats ahead or there's a chance there could be a car coming the otherway i will back off and wait till i get around it before i plant my foot back on the gas, only corners i take hard are the ones where there's no one around and if i can see the exit of the corner as well to see if any other cars may be coming.

And as for driving i don't think it all comes down to just taking lessons and getting experience, they should set up some specialised corses, i've done a rally drivng corse which helps teach you the handling characteristics of your car and i also did it in the rain on mud so i also learnt there are times when your car can loose control from under you but you are atleast taught how to regain the cars control.
And another course which i loved and think everyone should do it and thats the Ian Luff Advanced driving course, as you drive out of oran park you are a completly different driver and for the better as they teach you everything about a car (even basic things like how to set your mirrors) and the main and most important thing they teach you is, while your driving you arn't just trying to not run into other people but you have to drive in a way that you stop other people from hitting you, its called defence driving and you have to remember, just because you might be the best driver in the world doesn't mean some idiot isn't going to hit you!!!!. so you learn and get into the habbit of driving in a way where you watch every single car on the road and drive in a way to prevent them from hitting you.

i know i've gone on a bit there and a lot of it probably doesn't make sense but i think it should be compulsory for people to do Advanced Driver courses like these, so that way some people get a bit of a scare and realise you never have 100% control of a car. no matter how good you are.

now that is what i dont get
my speeding fine for going 19km/h over the limit was more than that, and 3 points as well
How is going a little too fast equivilent to, say, doing a handbrake turn around a corner, losing control, and writing off a BMW [which would also only be a neg driving fine).
just doesn't quite make sense to me

I'd classify myself as lucky realistically.
Because i have been lucky not to get fined.
Actually i can be various of the options in the poll.
Good, Safe/Slow/Precautious, Fast/Dangerous when provoked, and Lucky. Depending on my mood Wink

I totally agree with that draven - I reckon neg driving should be punished more harshly (hence leaving chums like me no choice BUT to be more careful on the road!)

but I think its a case of speeding being a more common occurence on our Aus roads, and also being a political issue (or a money raising one!!)) i.e. A LOT more ppl speed than get involved in accidents from neg. driving - see what I mean ? so making the fines larger from speeding should discourage ppl from speeding, or from getting caught speeding anyway)..

Also ppl like to speed, but people dont like to drive negligently and get into accidents. Speeding does not necessarilly = negligent driving.

Get my drift ? hard to explain.

Having said that - I hope I dont go home to find a $600 speeding fine !! Very Happy

yeah I hear where you're coming from les.
It's mainly the 3 points that gets me, cause that's more a reflection of driving ablity.
I dont mind too much the govt hiking speeding fines to make money (well, I have bigger gripes wit hthem anyhow, like HECS, but lets not go there) but neg driving should be more points than speeding, in the 15-30 bracket anyhows.
of course, once you hit 30-45 you probably deserve what you get

But then there are different degrees of neg driving...

You can have a granny backing out of a driveway and hitting a parked car... that should not be punished to harshly 1 pt or something

For someone who sped, lost it, and wrote off another car, and took out a signpost - maybe a harsher penalty.. points and $$. 5-6 points etc

Tell you who the winners are at the end of the day though... insurance co.'s !!!!! they get higher premiums from us !! arghh Smiley =

After the crash..... who knows ? I think my premium will not increase till when I renew the policy in April next year. ( I think) expecting $600 or so....... Nope
