2TG T18?? Wed, 19 November 2003 00:27 Go to next message
hey, i am pondering buying a 2tg with 18rg? pistons, and larger cams and dumping the motor in my T18. Is this a hard conversion? Whats the most power a 2TG can produce, WITHOUT goin turbo/nitros:| lol. what would be some starters? could i use my 3tc bottom end. or would that be costly

Can you bore a 2tg out to fit rg pistons? is there enough meat in the cylinder wall?

2T bore = 85mm.
18R bore = 88.5mm.

A 3.5mm overbore is a bit ambitious I think!

An 89mm bore is a common conversion, with a 3T crank (and block, unless you have a 2TGEU) you have a 2 litre 2TG. I wouldnt put any old 18R pistons though. Check the Toysports website in the US for ideas, they have very good tech articles and links to suppliers.
TE72s were available with 2TGEUs, both in Corolla and Sprinter versions. Bolt in swap to a T18.

The following I saved away from another 2TG/2T hybrid post recently;

Block to use:
Any, 2T or 3T. 2T prior to 2T-GEU will require machining for crank clearance.

For 3T, prepare the 3T block for twincam. Rotate the unused cam bearings to cover the oil holes. (Take them out and put back in at a different position).

Pistons:
Must be 3T. For cheap use 3T-C pistons, avaliable up to 86mm. The exhaust valve relief has to be machined a bit deeper. 3T-GTE pistons would give a low compression, don't use.

  • 86mm = 1813cc
  • 85mm = 1770cc

For good pistons, get custom forged. They are avaliable for 3T/ 3TG engines. Come ready in 89mm and big valve reliefs. One brand is Wisco I think. Also KB. 89mm = ~2L.

Crank:
Must use a 3T crank! This is the main bit. No one has determined a different between 3T-C and 3T-GTE, they may be the same. 3T has a 78mm stroke, and 8 counter weights. 2T crank has 4 counterweights.

Rods:
Any 2T- 3T rods can be used, same dimensions. Some are stronger/weaker. The only way to be sure is to have 2 sets and compare. Any will work fine.

Head:
2T-G! Early 88220 heads had smaller valves, all the rest have the bigger valves.

[i]Prepare the 3T block for twincam. Rotate the unused cam bearings to cover the oil holes. (Take them out and put back in at a different position).

Flywheel:
Any will fit, but use the lightest you got.

Camshafts:
88222 cams work well, 256 degrees with a lot of lift (~10.5mm?) Later ones had less duration.

Intake:
My choice is stock 40mm Solex sidedrafts on the stock manifold. DCOE bolt pattern will accommodate similar Weber or Dellorto carburettors. 2T-GE manifold will fit for fuel injection.

Hope this is of some assistance. I remember seeing a cutaway of a 2TG block with an 89mm bore compared with a standard bore block. The 89mm bore left only very marginal clearances to the galleries. My recommendation would be to avoid such excessive block modification.

My cousin did this conversion a while back. Bolting in a 2TG is very easy.

You gotta use the existing 2TG engine mounts, the 3T ones dont line up properly form his experience. And use the T18 box so the shifter lines up. Connect up hoses and the minimal electrics and away you go. Only problem was the accelerator cable, but some form of Corona one fitted well.

I reckon just stick with the stock 2TG with some extractors. getting it all rebuilt with big pistons and the works will cost a fair whack. Just enjoy it singing away to redline day in day out.
