thermo fan problem - all opinions appreciated Wed, 19 November 2003 05:52 Go to next message
Hey ppl, anyone know how the ECU (ae92) controls the thermo fans?
Is there a sensor?
Ever since i removed my air con, as soon as ignition is on ACC, or the car is running, both my thermos come on, 1 blowing onto clutch, and one for radiator i think.
I know for SURE they didnt' used to come on until engine was really hot (40degrees days)

They're fucking loud and annoying and my car is running too cold. Anyone suggest what to fix? maybe sensor has tripped out and it defaults to putting fans on as a safe guard??

Cheers all
Smile

on the thermostat housing (on top of the gearbox), there is a couple of plugs, there is one, which is the thermatic switch, and if it earths out, ie. craps itself... the fans will be on 24/7 with the ignition on.

it's the one with only one wire going into it, which from memory is the brown one. it's also around the $90 mark from toyota....

the sensor doesnt earth out and turn fans on
its always earthed to stop fans from commin on
then it loses the earth asnd turns the fans on

thats y they uses a normally closed relay for the fans

if the wire gets cut or falls of the sensor the fan will come on

so it needs an earth for the fan to stay offf

Most cars with a/c and thermos have the fans turn on with the air conditioning. So if what sideshow says is true then you've probably got a fan wire hanging from when you removed your air con, find it and ground it Smile

I'm assuming you have to ground it, otherwise you might have to hold the wire high, ie. +12v.

i presume u r using a sensor of a corolla thats otop of gbox

ok u need a relay(normally open) to trigger power to another relay when ignition is on(this other relay is normally closed)

then u have the sensor trigger this normally closed relay to supply the power (coming from the other relay) to the fan

its abit complicated but its the only way to do it so that the fan doesnt turn on when ignition is off
