ok...

see where the 2 red circles are?
there are holes there, where if you look inside, you can see little gears...
weld those little gears together.
there are actually 4 holes to weld inside.
be careful you dont get any spog or weld shit on the crown wheel, or pinion gear. if you do...your fuggered.

If I was you I'd dismantle the diff futher to get cage containing the spider gears (they're the one you want to weld) out of the centre housing and remove the crown wheel from it. If you get welding slag on the crown wheel or pinion you may as well throw it away.
You'll also get better access to the bits you want to weld and can also make sure you clean it thoroughly of any oil that will stuff up your welding.
I usually put some small square plates in the centre of the spider gears and also some triangular ones in between the teeth on the adjacent gears and weld it all together.
Use MIG if you've got it and pump up the volume.
P.S. It usually takes about a day before you can pick the thing up with your bare hands again

ok i've unbolted the big cog and the 4 little ones atatched to it from the housing. then i undid the small bolts and pulled off the side part with the bearing that contains the 4 little spider gears. do i need to unbolt the other side with the big bolts? they are awfully hard to take off so i dont really want to try.
cheers

u see the 4 smashed gears there, they are the ones to be welded together
one way to keep it cool is to mostly fill it with water, not so the water hits where u r welding , and that will dissipate the heat better, but u have to clean it well or else u will end up with a nice diff oil emulsification

ok i got up to that part, all i need is to get ti welded.
i got another question, after i degreased my diff last night i left it over night and now the bearings and cogs are covered in rust, does this matter? also the cog inside the housing has seized.
thanks

mild surface rust... bearing grease is your friend...
BTW... keep in mind that lockers will be noisy and wont last as long as an open diff...

I Spoke to the boiler makers at work re welding diffs and they said to try using hard facing rods. Not to join the gears, but to build up between the teeth and give more surface area. Then weld on very high current (for penetration) the two areas together.

!!! my diff broke today from just normal driving, im yet to open it up and have a look.
the welded diff was great for burnout/donuts. not good for parking. i didnt have much trouble driving around normally on it.

when i used to weld diffs up years ago
i would make tiny plates out of 5 mm steel
cut it in a small rectangle shape so it fits snuggly between the 4 gears
then weld all the gears to the steel plate
when u weld 2 hardened things together u can break the weld
when u weld a hardened gear to a steel plate its much better
i have never had a weld break doin it htis way
but then th e weakest thing in yr driveline will break next

welding diffs is not the 'science' its made out to be, at the end of the day you are butchering the diff and it wont last long anyway so in regards to heat treating etc it is a waste of time IMO
i have never seen a welded diff actually break the weld holding the spider gears together. if this happens perhaps you should check your welding skills!
they are good fun but they eventually break, the last one i had shook itself to bits (i imagine the skipping about of the back end caused this) and the bolts holding the crown wheel to the carrier vibrated themselves free (all bar 1). this is common apparently.
