Acrylic paint on taillights

Hey everybody. I want to paint the orange parts of my taillights with a transparent red paint. I can't find transparent red enamel anywhere, but i can get acrylic stuff from toyworld. Would i be safe to paint this on my lights, just to tint them a bit more red to match the rest of the car or will it peel off or stuff up my paint? Thanks alot

You should be able to use most bright or deep red enamel spray paints - as these are usally based on orgainc pigments with high colour strength and good transparency. Just don't put a thick coat on (instead do a couple light mist coats) and you'll be OK.
Acrylic from toyworld? I'm guessing this is a water based acrylic artist or hobby paint. This would be shit on plastic as they are generally not resistant to the plasticiser in plastic and will peel off or fail quite fast. They wouldn't be as transparent as solvent based acrylic or enamels either.
Are the orange parts of your tailights indicators? If so, shouldn't they have to remain orange (comply with RTA regulations)?

dude i work in the sign industry and have sprayed translucent paint, if you want it to look good when illuminated you have to use the real deal, please dont use regular paint or you will have a terrible time cleaning the lights and probably replacing them
give 'supply one' a call or 'viponds' they will look after you

um, they actually make paint for lenses. my outlaws bought it from autobarn for like $10 last week - he got orange for the inside of his indicators.

kool
i was just trying to help, isnt that why we are here ?
i am spray painter by trade though, i have the attitude of nothing but the best, everything i ever bought from supercheap or autobarn is watered down to the max with thinners and always causes problems so i dont mind paying the extra, even if it is overkill
i will have to get some pics of my cars up so you know what i am on about
cheers out

film dude?
i've heard/seen "nightshades" which is a spray on "tint" for lenses.
some look good some don't. like i've said b4 kinda defeats the purpose of lights (tinting em)
also - pretty illegal to do, be prepared for a canary/defect

i've seen a few cars with it, vn's, vk calais ect - and they all "look" pretty cool with this stuff on.
problem is look vs functionality is another story dude. if it was for show or something, would prolly be ok.

Has anyone used proper tinting film in their lens covers? I've seen a few cars with dark, almost black rear lights which can look pretty good on certain cars (though I doubt the RTA looks upon it favourably). Would these have been aftermarket lens covers or a home tinting job? Preferably not done with a black permanent marker (which i've seen done before )

Yea that spray on tint stuff is ok, probly illegal but I had it on my last car (not real dark, but dark enough) and I had the police check over the car a few times, resulting in no defect for it, they didnt say anything at all about it.

Some people I went to school with(hmm that was a while ago... ) tried to get the tinted light effect by putting black stockings over the lights it looked the real deal from about 50m away, but as you got closer and saw all the little holes, and could stretch it....well it looked s@*t.
