Elec Q: current leak to ground? Thu, 20 November 2003 06:12 Go to next message
Hi,

In what range should I expect my key-off current draw to be? It's a TA22 with 2TG, elec distributor, elec. fuel pump, and no other aftermraket accessories.

My near-new battery is losing charge inside 4 days ~ I'm wondering if I'm earthing out somewhere...?

What sort of current is it drawing now? Are you sure its being charged fully when the car is running?

I'm pretty sure it is charging all right, as immediately after running the car for an adequate period of time the car will restart fine. It's just over time that the retained charge declines, as though it's been slowly drawn away.

Current draw at rest is about 0.6A. All I can think of that may legitimately draw current in my setup is the centre console clock. No other accessories are fitted.

BTW, do you remember sending me a centre console and clock by COD to VIC a couple of months ago?

Ahh that was you? Very Happy Hope its still going good?
I have no idea how much current that the clocks normally draw but it wouldnt be .6 on an amp. However it would add to it.
Other things that can add to it is your stereo, suppressors, coil alternator.

I think that the clock should only draw about 75-100ma so something is pulling 500ma. Could be something like the boot light not turning off when the boot is closed. A 24watt bulb draws 1/2amp in a 12v system.

yer anything under .20 amps might be passable
0.0 should be what u should have
clocks hadly use anything

if yr battery goes tooooo flat then it might not be able to get charged again so dont leave it unused for afew weeks

disconnect the pos lead of batery
hook up a 15A ampmeter to it
most multimeters should do this

hook the leads between pos terminal and pos lead

then start unpluggin shit till it has no current draw

you have that around the wrong way Scorpion. at 24w globe will draw 2 amps on a 12v system
but a boot light is 5w (usually) and that draws 1/2 an amp

you got alarm just installed?
AFAIK, the only things drawing constantly on my car, are my radio memory, cd stacker memory, clock, ecu, and immobiliser

but i can leave my car for up to 2 weeks easily, and still start the car

wack a different battery in, and try that. your near new battery could have been fucked since you bought it

but try sideshows idea first

The only permanently on item in the car is the clock. No radio memory, no ECU, no alarm...

I don't think I even have a boot light, but your point is well taken.

I'll start pulling fuses from the box to ascertain what circuit the drain is on, then pull out my manual and start hunting... =/

Cool1, you have PM.
