lots of questions about celicas and 18rgeu Thu, 20 November 2003 09:15 Go to next message
is that battery tray in a ta23 just bolted in or is it welded in. Whats the best work to do to a 18rgeu with the head 11111 88253 besides turboing it.

Batt tray of the same as a 23 (i presume it is) is bolted in. Port and polish is a good start, double valve springs, valve grind etc etc
There is heaps of this stuff on these forums so do a search thats probably why no one has answered you.

if it has an 88253 head, and that is the original head, it has been retrofitted with EFI.

It should already have double valve springs if it is a 88253 head, but they will be no better than the singles from earlier models.

Performance Springs do supply heavy duty ones for these, except a spacer will need to be sourced to match the installed height.

Note, it is only worth putting in heavy valve springs if you plan to rev it high very often.
If you put them in and don't do cams and stuff, you'll actually lose power (motor has to do more work to turn the cams against strong springs)

Port and polish is always good and easy to do. The 88253 head can be ported well, and is not as fiddley as some of the other models.

If you're not going to turbo, then high comp pistons always help, as you would most likely have low comp ones in there now.
If you go for really high compression ie >10.5:1 then you should do cams aswell so you don't chew through too many head gaskets.

ive actually just purchased the head and it is 88270. Is that a good head and is it still good to port and polish. If i port it will i need bigger injectors to get more fuel or will it be alright.

i have compared both heads, and they are indeed identical.
Thats right, the 11111-88253 head and 11111-88270 head are identical.....

THERE IS ONE DIFFERENCE THOUGH!!! The 88270 head of course has the factory releifs in the intake ports to accomodate the injectors, which the 88253 doesnt have because it was a carby version.

These heads are much better for NA applications because of the largest valves of all 18R-G's (45/39mm), biggest ports, most meat around ports for MORE porting, larger exhaust studs, double valve springs (see above post re. strength)..... but their drawback is the cams. The 88253 head has the less aggressive cams which are the same cams as the 88250 (18R-GU), and the 88270 has the even less agressive cams.

Hope this helps duuuudes

giday mate
i recently purchased a 18r-gu with the w50 gearbox behind it to put into my 1990 toyota hilux. it currently has twin side drift solex carbies, bored 40thou internals, electronic ignition, and forged pistons im after information regard the performance line of these as i am currently having a bit of trouble getting the motor in but with a bit of customizing the shell and mounts its should be ok. Prior to the half finished conversion i knew nothing about the new motor but the second a tell anyone they act like its a big deal and i was just interested about what all the fuss is about thanks mate
regards

Ive got the 88270 head with those cams, so should i get ahold of the 88250 cams just to get a bit more performance.

I am curious about this too because i have an 18Rgeu in my celica, with 88270 head and factory efi, but seems to have slightly domed pistons..(i have pics from when we had the head off) So i was sondering if i should have the earlier cams aswell to accomodate the slightly higher comp. ratio?

I may have an 88250 bottom end with an 88270 head etc.. but i know for sure the cams are 88270 items.

would slightly longer duration cams help at all?
