sx/gti dash question Fri, 21 November 2003 12:06 Go to next message
With the ae93 sx/gti dash does it have an oil pressure light?? Or does it just have the gauge?? Because I've heard of people installing the dashes into their cars without the oil pressure gauge. Does that mean those people have no indication of oil pressure??? Or will the gauge only have two options? Low and Normal?

Also what is required to get the oil pressure light working? I heard a variable sensor was needed at the cost of 300 bux... correct me if I'm wrong.

No oil light on SX. It only tells you when you haven't got enough oil pressure and by then it's too late anyway.
There is an oil pressure sender on the front of the block in the SX. These are available from wreckers - I got one for $10.00 and I've also seen them on Tarago motors. I believe other cars use them as well. If you have air conditioning, you will need to remove the compressor mounting bracket to remove or replace the 4AGE pressure sender.

So which would be better off? An oil pressure gauge with no oil light? or an oil light with no oil pressure gauge?

Better off with an oil pressure gauge because you can see if oil pressure varies while driving which can indicate possible lubrication system problems, eg. going around corners or up steep hills etc can indicate low oil level or fault with oil pump.
