hey my mates rolla started doing this when they system was low on gas. It would turn on for a bit (few seconds) and then start flashing, but my 162 has no gas, and the light turns on fine...

Yeah the one on mine used to do that, it's just cause the system is low on gas.
But I now have the same thing as rob, I haven't regased the system after the engine swap but the light turns on anyway... weird.

dude,
There is an electrical connector on the Compressor which is faulty.
I think that is the Problem. My old SV21 Camry used to do the same thing when it was only a few years old.
Trying reading the owners manual, if you have one. I t may give you a clue.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies guys.
I do have a workshop manual (thanks to Rob) and I'll consult that when I get home from work.
Sounds like it could be the gas.. I have no idea when it was last re-gassed.
Cheers!

I'm pretty sure it indicates a problem with the actual magnetic clutch (or the circuit) on the compressor.

A/c Light Flashing is a Speed Sensor signal fault.
There is a speed sensor built into the Compressor.
If you turn the A/C on and have someone look at the Magnetic Clutch - it should try to engage . If the Belt Squeels and slips the compressor is seized.
On SV21 it was a common problem for the Connectors to be loose/corodded and stopping the signal getting through.
So best bet is to check the connections first.
Flashing light is not caused by too little gas as this will trip the low pressure switch and the A/C will not work at all ( No Lights anywhere)
Good luck

Thats weird man cause I did an engine swap recently so i had to disconnect the a/c system, I haven't bothered to get it regassed yet, but the light turns on the controls.
The reason I thought it was low gas, was cause mine has flashed for a little while now and when I pulled the lines off, not much gas came out of the system.

if your a/c turns on for few seconds, and flash, AND if there's no squeaking and your engine doesn't die, it's low gas
it will probably be the same results if the clutch of the compressor is not connected...
if it sqeaks in that time and/or your engine dies, it's a seized compressor, as the belt slips and your engine can't turn the seized compressor, there's too much load and the engine can't take the load...
when your system is low gas, check the valve, if there's a little gas coming out, that means you're lucky, if there's no gas, you've probably got a leak...
