i recently purchased a 18r-gu with the w50 gearbox behind it to put into my 1990 toyota hilux. it currently has twin side drift solex carbies, bored 40thou internals, electronic ignition, and forged pistons im after information regard the performance line of these as i am currently having a bit of trouble getting the motor in but with a bit of customizing the shell and mounts its should be ok. Prior to the half finished conversion i knew nothing about the new motor but the second a tell anyone they act like its a big deal and i was just interested about what all the fuss is about thanks mate
regards
Dale

I don't even think an 18RG would be legal in a 1990 model car due to it's age. I would be selling it and buying a 1G variant.

The 18RG is a nice motor and a great replacement over the 18R in RA23/28/40 model Celica's. In standard spec the RG is rated at 130 to 145 bhp depending on the version, and with your spec's i would guess you would be somewhere near the top end of that range. It's a good increase above the standard 88bhp that an 18R makes. But I agree that a 1G GTE/GZE would be a bigger improvement.
Cheers,
Mitch.

i also will reitterate what someone else just said...
the 18R-G motor (of any kind) is older than your car, thus it's not legal to be put in there (without you having to get the motor to pass 1990 emission laws/test ie. expensive and near impossible)

I would agree with this is every other State except WA. I don't know what engine is standard in a 1990 Hilux, but if its a 21R then going 'down' to fit an 18RG is not considered a problem here in this State.

Unfortunately the dude is from Qld, which means the conversion simply won't be legal. That means he'll effectively be driving around in an unregistered, uninsured vehicle, and if the EPA catches you doing this, prepare for the biggest arse-reaming of your life!

Both the 1UZ and 1G have been done in late-model Hilux's. Try doing a search, you're bound to find plenty of info.
