was thinking something fully synthetic but was told by a mate that something like mobile one wouldnt be too good of an option.
well im not sure, from experience i was wondering if you guys could help me out. possibly an engine oil that could give me a better performance wise from my good ol' Toyota engine oil.

mobile 1 is synthetic and is good stuff.
oil choice doesnt matter so long u change it often and its the right type. for a 4age go a 15W-40 synthetic

mobil one is nice stuff but exxy.. as long as your motor doesn't chew thru oil yet, it will be a good investment.. as simon says (ho ho ho... we're all comedians ) check what hot viscosity you need. the cold doesn't matter so much... thinner is ok.
fwiw, in older motors that need 50 for hot, mobil 1 5W50 is great stuff, thin when cold so gets around the motor easier, and less warm up time, but stays as 50 weight when hot...

I'm presuming that you've got a 4AFE engine right? I really wouldn't be too stressed about spending up on anything more exotic than GTX-3 personally...

If you got leaks or smokey or >200k go for the 50 o/wise stick with the 40. Synthetic is probly overkill unless you are really spending alot of time @ >6000rpm. IMO once your engine has run non-synth for a few years no point changing to synth cause your internals are already gunked-up and despite the claims the detergents and stuff they put in the synth oils do SFA.
Just my 2c.

with an oz summer coming up, your motor will thank you for using a 50 oil
remember the 10w30 rating is for the engine when new. I'm guessing yours has more than 100k on the clock, so it never hurts to go a bit thicker

that makes sense, the sticker is in japanese with the english words "10w-30", and japan weather is cold i believe.
I think the engine is over 100,000k's, it's hard to tell, it's the third engine that has been put in the car(7mge, 7mgteu 7mgte), total Km's on the clock is 145,000ks
i thought 5w-50 was thinner oil than 10w-30? or is it the other way around?

I have 270,000 on my Lancer. I use 20W-50 GTX2. Is that good? I was thinking of getting some GTX3 15W-40 for my next service.

at the same temperature, a higher number is thicker. so a 50 is thicker than a 30.
the W is the winter number, ie what the viscosity is when cold.
i think a 5 weight oil at low temps is similar to a 50 weight when hot.... so a 5W50 has farily consistent viscosity,
whereas a 20W50 is thick when cold and thins as it warms up.
a 5W-50 is thinner when cold and thicker when hot, than a 10W-30

depends on the condition of your engine
generally with that number of kms, I'd be using a 50
witha 40, you might find you burn it

Valvoline do an oil called extra life, it's got an odometre on the front. It is the best oil for cars with a fair few k's on it. I'd recommend it to anyone!
I'm using Magnatec in the Soarer, but it's only got 100,000k's on it. Barely run in for a Toyota.

This is cool, having a chat about oil, i've learnt heaps already!
And so today i decided to change my oil, Boy oh Boy! what a pain in the ass changing oil on an MA70 is for a first timer like me!
first of all after i warmed the engine up and got underneath to undo the sump bolt. Man is hot oil on the arm a bastard! i now know it does'nt drizzle out after the last thead of the nut comes off, it comes out like a tap.
then just getting the oil filter off was hard enough, bieng in such a tight hard to get place, i ended up using a wet towel to get the grip to remove it, and spent half an hour trying to get the filter out like a maze! Also when trying to put the new filter in, i got oil dripping on my face, in my hair and on in my eye!(OWE MY EYEBALL! )
but it's all done now, and boy was the old oil black and chunky! i'm sure my engine is better off. Next time i change my oil i won't fuck up so much!
