I notice a lot of you use HP as opposed to KW. Just wondering what you all prefer to measure power in, and why?

No no, I know that HP is UK and USA, I know that KW is metric and I know how to convert between them. I was just wondering what measurement each of you prefer to use when referring to power and why ya do.

I always use HP because I'm used to using that scale of measurement, and most of the people I talk to (about cars) are the same. I'm not sure why, but that's the way it seems to be!

I always quote KW figures
if someone else quotes hp tho, I swap over to HP

it's not a tough conversion

just remember that 220kw = approx 300hp

Why do the japs use PS then? Doesn't PS stand for power stroke (no not play station)

Yeah, I wondered about that too.
And shouldn't we be using kgm instead of nm for torque? Bah.

No.

Although I have often wondered why we use psi rather than bar. But perhaps that's just for the wank factor... 7 sounds so much better than 0.5... Smile

And I always use kW. Australia entered the modern (read: metric) world in the 70's.

Does anyone know why they use this?

I was once told that power-strokes was a measurement with all ancillaries connected ie. power steer/aircon etc unlike Yank and Aussie HP claims, they have nothing connected?..

All ancilliaries, exhaust, emissions etc connected as normal is "net" power. Disconnect all of the above and you have "gross" power, but manufacturers stopped using that in the 70's. This is completely separate from the scale of measurement being used, be it HP or PS or kW.

BTW one of my pet hates is "power stroke". I have no idea where this came from, but as explained above PS stands for pferdestarke. "Power stroke" sounds so gay! Razz

yeah, metric and imperial are wierd. I can't think of height of people in metric, I don't even know how tall I am in metric.

and if america drive on the other side of the road in a desparate attempt to be different than the rest of the world (England, in their case)

why in the world are they still using Imperial measurements?

a) it's old skool, get with the times and b) it is England's measuerments origionally, you would think they would change as soon as an opportunity presented itself.

and metric is so much easier when it comes to things like science. I'm pretty sure 99% of science in america is done with metric cause its so much more mathematically sensible.

Actually, it was 1975 - I was ten and remember it. (unfortunately ... Sad )
There was the big deal with the new rulers (all made from wood, plastic was too expensive back then) that had all those number on them! Imagine, instead of only going to 12 they went all the way up to 30!
I was born the year before decimal currency came in.

Going back a bit, why would we use kg/m for torque? N/m is an SI unit and is metric.

And pressure, wouldn't the SI unit for pressure be kPa or Pa? This way it looks bigger Rolling Eyes

You're right about that! My brain mustn't have been working yesterday (not that it ever really does...)

1bar = 100kPa

That means I run 75kPa! Woohoo! hehe

Re: Kilowatts and Horsepower Thu, 27 November 2003 03:40 Go to previous message
And there seems to be two kinda of HP. Metric and US:

Metric Horsepower * 0.7355 = Kw
US Horsepower * 0.7457 = Kw

What the fuck?! As if we don't have enough measurments allready, now we have Kw, HP, PS, and HP AGAIN! Morons. Morons all of them. Very Happy

Isn't kg/m metric too?

And I don't think BAR is metric is it?

So we should have Power in Kw, Toruqe in Nm, and Pressure in KPA to be up with proper metric measurements eh? Rolling

I think when I get my project car I'll have to install a digital dash so that I can switch between KPA, PSI, HP, KW, PS, NM etc measurments. Laughing
