Of course, the heart of any car...
the bodykit.

If that's the best question you can come up with, go do some more real research on your own first, then come back with some real questions.

AE82 is older, lighter, cheaper.
AE92 is newer, has some bugs ironed out.
Both will handle well and are good for conversions. New parts are easy for both. 2nd hand parts are easier for the ae82 because of it's age.
Get the highest model available:
AE82: twincam (4AGE)
AE92: SX (4AGE)
This will mean you'll have to upgrade less (better brakes, suspension, interior, engine)

I would recommened AE92 SX or GTi

i prefer hatch because i hace owned two of them (cs ltd) and now the GTi hatch

but secas are nice two

earlier SX's had better options like trim and power mirrors but SX seca 2 and GTi hatch got bigger brakes and different kit (and gunmetal grey) instead of just red or white (oh yeah body colour rear spioler on hatch aswell

If it's a first car, i'd get an older rwd corolla or celica.
Learn how cars handle better in a rwd.

I would be getting myself a ke30/35/38/55 shape corolla, they are cheap to buy, easy to work on, parts are everywhere, they probably have the most diff and brake options of the early rollas. the standard k motors are tuff, but not fast, perfect candidate for a 4a-whatever. thats what i reckon anyway Very Happy

ABSOLUTE CHEAPEST easiest corolla to work on would have to be the KE70 or AE71 corolla.
These were available in both sedan and wagon, with the sedan being far more common and having a better rear end setup.

Basic specs are the same for each model, but here are the main differences:
# KE70 = 1.3L 4K-C motor. 4sp manual or 3 auto.
# AE71 = 1.6L 4A-C motor. 5sp T50 manual or 3 auto.

Both use crappy borg warner (bog whiner/warmer) diff's and coil sprung rear ends (in the sedans, the wagons have leaf spring rears). The diff is simple to upgrade later on though.

Parts are the cheapest and most readily available of all the corollas just about - with my last visit to Pick'n'payless yeilding a count of at least 8 to pick from there for parts.

For upgrading its hard to beat this model. Installing a 4a-ge is a simple bolt in matter, with only EFI hassles to worry about. If you want to see just how easy it all is, have a look at my thread for my AE71:

For a first car its pretty choice really. Cheap, simple, repairable, not too old, readily available, easily modified.
Sure there are no "bodykits" and shite - but for a first car you really dont want that stuff anyway! Aftermarket "goodies" for this car dont exist - except for the 'do-it-yourself' variety [read - wreckers]

bloody good points there Mr Witzl...

later, a little more refined.. a bit heavier too, but heaps easier to get registered with 4AG than earlier models....

a REALLY big plus with KE/AE70 is that they have raxk and pinion steering!!! feels nicer, less play, more space for conversions..

and yeah, chip as chips....

Mr Witzl/Stewart: did many of the AE71's come with aircon - or can others fit the same spot inside?

and air-con compressor brackets for 4AGx engines are easy to come by?

and the T50 from the original bolts up to the FWD engien without mods (except for clutch - but that's a given)?

i'm thinking that a cheap, old, rolla wagon might be the go for a non-celica car but i'm in qld and without aircon i ain't lookin' at it,

charles.

The witzl, you win Very Happy the ke70/ae71 are probably the best for mods. But i do prefer earlier corollas by a mile (no offence) which is why i suggested the last of the sort of old school corollas.
