Installing tacho to ae92

Hey,
I have this oldish tacho sittin around, I wanna wire it up into dads CS ae92 Sedan, I'm scared I ain't doin the engine too good. Its a 4AFC as u would know, so no rev limiter.. Can someone give me a run down on how to install it? The tacho has 4 wires, U proabably all knew that, but i'm quite new to this all.. Maybe u might be able to make it a "Wiring Tacho for Dummies" type of installation directions!
Thanx!
These are typical speeds I would change gears, could u possibly tell me how many rpm i am doin, and what is safe to actually go up to in each gear..
Typical
First 20kms
Second 45kms
Third 80kms (sounds quite interesting, its a lot more responsive at these speeds, not to mention use a lot more fuel)
Fourth 120kms
Fifth 160kms (shit scared to try any faster)
I find the engine is a lot more pleasant to drive when i do the above speeds, it just sounds like at the above speeds, the 4afc is going spastic and doesn't seem to like those speeds...
Also, this is unusual but i still can't figure out what it is, say i'm sitting at 40km/hour in third gear, and i hold off changing gears to about 80kms the car has kinda like a bit of a boost, like it feels similiar to TVIS where u feel the engine opening up but its quite a rapid increase, it picks up speeds a lot quicker.
Could someone explain this please??
Thanks to everyone at toymods!

I had a look, it complicated things even more, i couldn't find what i'm after...
Say I have the 4 wires, how do i attach the wires to what they have to be wired to? Are they actually wires I will be splicing??
I'm very confused on what to do.
I need really basic instructions, maybe someone could find the info on that page, coz i wasn't sure what to look for.
Regards
Adrian

freakincage_com - Hey, Yeah slowly understanding,
Yeah there is 4 wires!
I'm pretty sure they are the colours, I will look at it tonight,
So I connect the white wire to one of the wires in the dash, that lights up, ok that shouldn't be a problem.
Where abouts is the ignition swithc?? is that near the dash too? Maybe someone could tell me the colour of it and where it comes from.
The black, where should that go? I ain't sure where there is a good earth.
Green is the signal?? So this ignition coil is under the bonnet, but do i just attach the wire to the negative terminal? Does it look like a capacitor?
This is a carby motor by the way!!
Conquest - Those figures were from personal experience, first hates to go more than 15kms, (its screaming), and yeah second i could get to more but i'm just not sure what RPM i'm doin, i'll soon find out with this tacho...
Yeah that thing how it feels like the trottle really opens up, urs does the same thing? what car ya got? It just feels like more valves have been open etc!!!
Does anyone have pics etc that may help with the installation of the tacho, I'm really new to this stuff!

lol it kewlz dude, ok so u kinda understand the dash lightin???
ignition is where u stick ur key in and start your car...behind that litle thing where u stick ur key in there should b some wires...correct?? well the red one does to whichever wire is connected to the "on" section on ur ignition??
a earth shouldnt b a problem..try connecting it to your stering collem..one of the bolts holding it in....or just any where there is bare metal conecting to the body*once u'z hooked all the other wirtes up u can just tap the earth around until u find a good spot..
now for the coil....it has a positive and negative termanil and another wire going to ur distributor cap on ur engine... u connect the grrn wire to the negative on the coil....
does any of that help??

Yer I get the same thing in my RT142 Corona, in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Except in 3rd gear I get the boost at ~75km/h but slows right down at ~120km/h and in 2nd gear at ~55km/h, slows down at 75km/h.
... can't wait to get a real car.

LOL yeah i understand the dash lightin (kinda, i'll take a look tonight) and I should be alright findin a wire etc...
But yeah this "on" section, what colour should the wire be?
So it will be like a switch and on one of the wires it should have IGNITION wire, and i Just connect the wire up to it...
So i can just connect a bolt the earth up to a steering column screw, that should be easy enough, so does it actually get the power from the earth??
Will the coil actually have a negative symbol??
I'm getting there HAHAHAHAHA

Seriously man, it is not this difficilt to install a tacho even for a beginner,
If you can't figure out where all the power and lighting gos,
An easy way is to hook both lighting and power to the same source, obviously the light will turn on when the tacho does but will that really worry you,
If you can't figure out the ignition wire, another easy way is hook it up to your ignition wire from your stereo system, if you use the stereos power and ignition and grounding points, then thats 3 down
the coil should connect up to the brown wire in your coil box thing
One tacho is piss easy, try doing five, and i was a beginner myself

Another thing would be to fuse your wires, eg power, for safety sake

Hey,
What if I am running the stock headunit and everything, I can still find out the wires ok?? I am pretty confident, I've found some wiring diagrams for the corollas so it should be easy enough gettin 3 plugs from there, my mate down the street should be able to help with the ingition wire too i believe..

I replaced the cluster in my AE92 CS with a CSX tacho-cluster and the tacho worked straight away. This means the wiring is already there for the tacho. Pin 1 on the A plug in the back of the cluster carries the tacho signal so you should be able to join your tacho wire to the wire going to that pin. If you're still having trouble in a couple of weeks time, my tacho-cluster will be up for sale as I'm changing to an SX cluster shortly.

That ain't bad... Its moreso joining the others such as power and ignition that i'm a bit more concerned about..

Hey Scorpion dude
If you change to the SX instrument i can email you a layout of the entire wiring loom
I've only just completed it, took me about 4hours to figure out
I'm running the AE92 Sece CSI with the full SX interior including instrument panel, its pretty sweet, almost like the real thing
all i need now is a more powerful engine ^^;

SR Twincam,
Seriously man, its only FOUR wires
If you can't do that, go to Jay Car buy 3m red, green and white wire, and 1m black, a switch, 2 fuses 5a with fuse holder
and run the wires from the battery thru the hole in the fire wall to the tacho maching the colors and place the switch on the power and lite, even simplar is buying the 3m 10a wire, run it to the switch, then split it into 2 5a wires wiring up to the tacho
black goes to a screw point on the chassis, or strait back to the battery,
and get your friend to do the coil
simple, oh and don't forget the wire ties

Was it simply a matter of removing the old cs cluster and plugging in the csx cluster?? Or did you have to rewire it??
