my solex's 'miss' for about a minute when cold, after which they are fine. could be similar problem?

Just carb tuning, (and/or) timing, or nothing!!..
As long as it goes away when it warms up, don't worry about it..
But try giving it a bit of a tune and see how it goes.

auto carbs at the gabba, mark and james at capalaba, they have a dyno too {$30 a run}, carb n ject, look up carburettor in the yellow pages
