Hey All,
This thread may have been done but I need expertise since i need a remedy else, it will rust like fungus .
I just saw the corners of my Tailgate after a wash and there is a rust patch bubbling on the right hand side of the bottom of the window seal ... but to no suprise, it's common... What should I do? Should I just cut it out and bog it?, weld a new plate or is there a way to fibreglass the whole bottom seal or something to that extreme to prevent rust from forming in the tailgate?
As now I am running out of ideas and now 2 cars have holes in their tailgate any ideas and concepts would be greatly apprechiated...
Cheers.

strip to metal (leaving surface rust) and use
POR-15
take the window out while youre at it, strip the corners to metal, and use:
POR-15

POR-15
How hard is it to remove the rear window?
|
pay $50 and have someone came and take it out for you!! seriously not worth the effort doing it yourself (i just went through all this!!)
grega - por-15 is the best!! just get a little can and see what you think. its a bit $$, but very very worth it

Serious, Ed is a big girl The window is really easy to get out, just takes a bit of time. My girlfriend did it for me one day we were both at the workshop. Just be careful not to damage the seal.
Try to remove all the flaky rust and shit and make sure the whole lot is coated with POR15. If you need to weld in some new metal, make sure that is coated with POR15 too.
As Glen said, a wet seal would have prevented most of the trouble in the first place, as it is, the water sits on the seal and slowly seeps in. Making it a wet seal (as I plan to do) will be the go.

Well, the fact is that it costs $50 to put it back in, or $50 to take it out AND put it back in, so you may as well pay someone to do it

Or if you just take your time you can save your $50 and put it towards something useful. If you don't rush, its not hard...they won't guarantee they won't break it anyway.

Actually, with rear windows, the do guarentee not to break it, its front laminated windows the don't guarentee.
But you got to put it back in anyway, and when it comes to sealing something perfectly, I will pay for a professional

As for a proper seal, if you have a look at it, its not that complicated on the rear one, especially as I have the Toyota manual for the body which gave simple instructions on how to do it.
We're just planning to follow the instructions as per normal and slip in a bead of window sealant under the flap of the seal on each part of the seal.
