Hi all.
I just fired up my 1GGTE (thanks for your help Stew!!)in my celica but the thermostat doesn't seem to be working properly. I haven't hooked up the temp guage yet so I don't know how hot it's getting but it seems to be getting hot and the thermostat isn't opening.
I followd stews advice and threw it in a pot on the stove and it opened but the water was almost bioling when t did. It shouldn't have to get that hot should it?
Well if it is stuffed, is there any toyota's with the same thermostat??
Thanks, Tim.
PS damn the engine sounds cool...

It is always good practice to replace the thermostat on any engine you install. Typically, Jap engines use higher temp thermostats than Oz spec engines. Take the thermostat to your local parts place and match it to one from an Australian supply engine. I think late Camrys are the one but can't remember.

Yeah i think i might have a similar problem, but im not sure. I just took mine for a quick run round the block (with no temp gauge also) and when i got back and turned it off, it was spewing coolent in2 the catch can. The top tank felt very hot whilst the bottom one was barely warm.
Does this sound like my thermostat has had it?

Dylo, No, that doesn't sound like the thermostat (i'm no expert though)the thermostat stops the water from entering the top pipe, thus circulating in the system. If the thermostat is stuck then the top hose would be cold and the bottom is hot.
My thermostst seems to be ok now, after runnning a bit it opens and the radiator flows but it still isn't leaving the open loop mode, ie the revs aren't dropping. I think perhaps the temp sensors may be failing, how to check them?
The engine runs with high revs when cold, then, when the thermostat opens, the revs speed up slightly and then drop back, revs up then drops back, all on it's own. It's like pressing the throttle a bit then letting it off, it just keeps doing this.
Thanks, tim.

Tim, I had a strange revving problem like that too. when idling, mine used to rev up, then straight down and continue for as long as it wanted. Sometimes it stopped, sometimes it didnt even do it tho.
My problem was sorted as i found the alternator was stuffed, and therfore only running from a battery, when that battery got low, it seemed to make it switch modes all over the place like that. Now that i have an operational charging system, the problem has sorted itself out.
But another strange issue i had was the coil pack wasn't earthed properly, and this makes it run like a total dog. So maybe check that too!
...just some ideas mate. but easy to check, it could well be faulty sensors.
And yeah how good do they sound! especially with only the small piece of exhaust i have that came with the half cut!
So whats my problem with the tepmerature of the tanks? or is my radiator just damn good and is cool at the bottom! Is it normal for the motor to squirt some in2 the overflow tank after being run?

The reving up and dying thing has soprted itself out now, but still seems to be idling high.
Maybe your radiator is that good! I dont know what else it could be
