Taking not I do not know what a "hat" is. I know the 86kw is blue and the 100kw is red but what is a hat?

The colour of the rocket cover , the thing that says toyota 16v twincam.
On the top of the engine , red is 100kw , blue is 86.
You should also be able to tell by the throttle body , bluetop has a TVIS map throttle body , and the red has a AFM non TVIS.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The best way of distinguishing the two is to look for TVIS (86kw) and also the big (86kw) or small (100kw) ports on the manifold side.
Don't forget the early gen AE92 motor which is a hybrid of both having TVIS & big ports but the later 7 rib block.
Have a look at Bill Sherwood's site - he's got pics showing the differences between the two ...

Thanks guys. No idea who bill sherwood is but so far mine has red writing. Cant check the port size since my car is dead atm. My friend was doing a service for me and while doing the belts he found that the gears were leaking oil so now we need to look for a replacement and it just had to be a sunday today

Its Toyota Variable Induction System. Pretty much it has butterfly's in the intake manifold which open at a certain rpm. Around 4000 i think. Its meant to make better low-end performance.

FYI...
My NA '89 MR2 came out with the 86kw, Red Top, Big Port, TVIS, AFM, + (I think) 7 rib Block. And I think it's 4400 that the TVIS kicks over to the big intake tracts. TVIS was the first attempt at what is achieved by Variable Valve Timing (VVTi, VTEC, etc.) in todays cars. Helps to maintain better intake velocity by using a smaller intake at the lower revs... better torque down low without sacrificing power up high. Thanks Toyota
