Some adj coilover strut questions

I'm currently putting together my adjustable coilover struts, and I've got a couple of questions...
First of all, bumpstops. I've noticed in photos of other adj coilover setups that none of them seem to have bumpstops. Is this usual? Why? If it's recommended to run them, where do you get bumpstops small enough to fit in the spring?
Secondly, torqueing up the top nut. Because I can't exactly hold the strut shaft still anymore, (because the upper spring seat doesn't "lock" onto the shaft like the stock one does), how do you get the correct amount of torque on it? Or do you just put a rattle gun on it and hope for the best?

yes run a bumpstop, plenty of susp places sell them, hell you can get a combined dust protectors and bumpstops. Try TSR, GSA and so forth.
as for the top bolt, top of the shock should have a notch in it, depending on how your coilovers are desinged you will have a plate going over this... put vicegrips on thios and do the top bolt up.
alterntivly, put it all in the car and put the weight of the car opn, then get a breaker bar and hammer and tap thw bar and do the bolts up.
rattle gun makes it a bitch to get off

Johnny: I have? Umm... okay... I must be a bit slow, I still don't get it
Simon: Yes the shock shaft has a notch, no the top hat doesn't lock onto it... If you just use the weight of the car on it, is that anywhere near enough torque?

I used chisel and knife to make that notch. Aluminium is soft. But it should be good enough if you put your car on it's own weight and just tighten the nut as tight as it goes. It shouldn't bang. Dont damage the shock shaft with vice-grips. I dont use bump stops or dust covers but I know, I should.

What I do to tighten the top nut on my coil overs is to get a set of curved jaw vice grips then go out to the yard and cut about 4 inches off the end of a garden hose. Split the garden hose and wrap this around the shock shaft and then grip the hose with the vice grips.
I'm sure I get a great rep around my neighbourhood every time I play around with my suspension. Cutting a bit off the hose and then going and hanging out in the garage is great for making the bloke next door respect you.

Hmm, got bumpstops today ($100!!!), they came with dust covers but the dust covers don't fit in the springs... So I guess I won't use them then...
