w55 gearbox

I have found another second hand w55 gearbox from another car to replace the one on my 3tgteu, is there more than one type of w55? (i heard steel and alloy casing) - its got a 18gru or something to that effect it in at the mo(the new gearbox im getting), it has same axle and trans code as my current car.
How long should it take a workshop to whip the old one out and put the new one in (so i can go get a quote and say HEY! it will only take a hour) = most workshops in NZ charge $50 an hour.

W55 is alloy case.
Be carefuly, if the gearbox is coming from a 18RG i'd be 99% sure its a W50.
Swap gearboxes shouldn't take a workshop anymore than 3 hours MAX. I can do it in my driveway in that time. With a hoist would be much quicker.

Can someone correct me if i'm wrong, but Toyota never made a 18rg - w55 bellhousing did they? What is your axle code?
To change the gearbox you need to be able to get the car quite high off the ground. At least high enough so you can comfortably lie under there and lift the box in and out. Apart from that no special tools are required. Assuming you are not changing the clutch also..

Just because you poor Aussies never got any decent cars doesn't mean they weren't made
We stripped a 18RGEU/W55 powered RA63 with an F292 IRS rear end. I confirmed the specs from the chassis plate, so they were definitely made and quite common here in NZ. We got a lot of the Jap spec cars as imports. The TA63 Carina (3T-GTEU and W55) I am using for my conversion was also a Jap import. There are a least another two driving around my area.
Gearbox change over is easy as, other than if you drop the box on yourself or can't get it out from under the car as you have axle stands under the suspension and your car is too low. (trust me I found that one out the hard way lol)

Just swap your bellhousing over onto the 'new' W55, and it will be a bolt up deal. You may also need to change the shifter housing over if they are different, so that it comes up through the floor in the correct position.
