Ma61 - Reccomended Brake pads

On a mission to re-do the suspensions and brake package, I plan to source some nice fresh DBA LongLife Slotted disks.
Knowing brake pads make a big differnce, what do u reccomend ?

I'm using EBC Greenstuff (front) and Blackstuff (rear) in conjunction with DBA slotted rotors. I'm very impressed with how it's performed.

Standard height king springs will still lower the car to a degree.

EBC's are a great pad, so let Norbie be your guide. If you can afford Padgid, they are good as well. Try and stay away from any Bendix stuff unless more of the same stopping power as standard is what you are chasing.

Mitch.

I had Bendix Metal-Kings in the front - very cheap. They stopped well, once bedded in, but where hell on the rotors. I'm now swoppong to Greenstuff on the front.

Lowering the ride height reduces weight transfer. this is good for cornering and bad for traction.
It will also add camber too front and rear wheels, possibly good for cornering and bad traction and brakes.
Will change things like roll centres and roll stiffness but if you keep it reasonable, say 1 inch, you won't notice a lot.
I am not sure if the MA61 rear suspension set up is designed to add toe-in during bump, if it does, you will need to get the rear wheels realigned.
All up, unless you are going to modify a lot of things to get everything better than factory, I wouldn't change it any more than say 1 inch. On an MA61, that should look great.

Lovells are good if you just want to lower an inch or so. Any more on the rear and your camber will go up the creek. You can get a camber adjustor for the front - which will also raise the car by 1.5", making the whole process expensive and redundant. I know, I did this .

Funny you guys are talking about this at the moment!
I drove my supra from Artarmon to Chatswood on friday with a mild 12psi and rocked up at my destination where my friends pointed out moderate clouds of smoke coming from the front wheels, the mags where way too hot to even touch!
I had decent brake fade from about half way there too.
Thats with bendix, metal kings plus so i've put some original toyota ones back in, i'll see how they go over the next few weeks. Its on new DBA longlife slotted rotors too
Personally wouldn't go the Metal king plus's....

When using EBC greenstuff, I've had my MA70 brakes smoking (we thought the engine was on fire) after a brisk run through the McLaren Vale on morning. No loss of pedal feel, no loss of braking power, just smoking pads and the disks looked a bluish colour....
So many people spend heaps of $$$ on aftermarket disks and calipers, when just changing to good quality pads makes the world of difference.

Admittedly, when very cold they do squeal a tiny amount. After a good brake they warm up and no longer squeal. Greenstuff are the street (and a tiny bit of track) pads, you can get yellow and red which get progressively more track than street. I think I have the instructions/specs at home still, I'll have a look.
I used to have some carbon metallic pads in my old car (they were US made "Hawk" brand). These stopped like nothing else, but squealed all the time unless being absoluter punished. I prefer the Greenstuff as they are more user friendly.
When we had them smoking, it was after 30 mins of punishing driving, with regular deceleration from 180Kph to 60Kph etc etc . I was worried I'd warped the disks but they were OK. Won't do it again in a hurry!

Yeah Greenstuff pads perform fine when cold (they are a street-oriented pad), although I have noticed occasional squealing as well. Nothing excessive.
I might add that a friend of mine got the brakes on his Triumph glowing bright orange on a mountain run, and he suffered no loss of braking performance or pedal feel - and he's running Greenstuff as well. I was mightily impressed.

I've got EBC greenstuff v4 on my car, AE86 with RA60 struts/rotors/calipers.
And up until the last mountain run, they were very nice, great initial bite and when you got a bit of heat into them they were even better, bordering on grabby, but very consistent. And mine don't squeal at all.
But last week we did a brisk run through the hills, nothing special, the only difference was having to slow down everytime i caught up with traffic. I definately overheated them, and instead of being the green colour, all the paint is now a lovely flakey charcoal.
They lost a fair bit of their bite that night, once cooled most of the performance came back. But i don't have the initial bite that i like. Maybe a bleed and deglazing the pads/rotors might bring it back.
Cost me 170 for the DB265 shape pad, delivered to my door. from Racebrakes in Flemington, they could get me RB74's which is a QFM street compound for 140. But they needed spare backing plates and 3-4 weeks to make them.

Well i gave the stocker pads a run and they overheated in half a suburb but excellant initial bite before overheating, shame. They're actually worst for overheating than the metal kings to be expected.
Def looking for somthing better but money is tight ATM.

I use RDA slotted rotors on all 3 of my MA61's.
They are just as good if not better than DBA's
$130 each.
I also use lucas brake pads on all three cars
4 times in a row....hard on the brakes from 210km/h to a standstill........no sign of fade.

They are way cheaper than EBC pads and in the same league!
Just as a side note........most of the current crop of clubman rally competitors use much the same setup as mine.......funny seeing i am one of the crop!
BTW.....dont forget to upgrade your fluid!

They should do about 30% if the car is set up correctly, but metal kings or something similar should be more than adequate for the rears even in hard driving.

I've got metal kings on my front. Very happy with the stopping both cold and hot, and haven't encountered brake fade yet (after a couple of old pac high runs).
However Blacksupra is right - HEAPS of brake dust. Like, it needs to be cleaned more than once per week (I do about 500kms/week).

If you think the Metal Kings stop well, do a few laps of a track and you'll see how average they are. Ok for the road, but that is it, especially on the fronts.
Brake dust is one reason why my mags have to be the style where they are easy to clean !!!!

when i sourced brake pads recently from Repco, they:
had no 1983 MA61 listed
the model in their computer said i had an RA61 Celica Supra
...
anyway, i have lucas pads - sorry folks but ' think i chucked the boxes.
they stop OK considering i never refinished the disks before fitting (original pads were down to last few mm and disks are not smooth).
mega brake dust considering all i do is city driving.

Hey guys,
As u can see i'm new to this forum but I found my old boxes of Lucas pads sitting on my bookshelf so i thought i'd post up some info.
Australian reference for the front pads are DB265 and rears are DB290.
Find that they stop real good. But like thechuckster said, mega brake dust. I'm contemplating just painting my mags black to save me the trouble cleaning them every week.
Hope this helps..

Yeah I'm running DBA Longlife slotted at the moment. But on standard rotors on the previous set of Lucas I found that they didn't last quite as long as standard pads. Not by a huge margin mind you... just noticeable. Haven't tried the EBC Greenstuff before so I can't compare the two.

Some cars with four-wheel disc brakes have a separate drum brake integrated into the hub of the rear wheels. This drum brake is only for the emergency brake system, and it is actuated only by the cable; it has no hydraulics.
Other cars have a lever that turns a screw, or actuates a cam, which presses the piston of the disc brake.
installing aftermarket performance brake pads on only the front wheels will mess us the brake balance of your car. also it is dangerous on the streets
